February 16th Millennium Forest News

February arrived and the weather was chillingly cold.
The other day, snowfall was observed in the city center for the first time in two years, and traces of accumulated snow could be seen in the Millennium Forest.

We discovered new buds of hydrangeas that brighten up the Millennium Forest from spring to summer!
When you see lush new buds, you can't wait for the flowering season.

This is a Japanese white-eye with its striking light green body.
It looks very similar to the Japanese bush warbler, known for its memorable cry of "hohokekkyo." To tell the difference, look at the area around its eyes! As its name suggests, the white-eye has a clear white area around its eyes.
Although Japanese white-eyes are omnivorous, their favorite foods include nectar and fruit.
In early spring, we may see more Japanese white-eyes visiting the Millennium Forest than we do now.

As the sunlight streams in, the familiar mallards are floating on the pond.
Recently, we often see the two of them taking naps or swimming together.
It's clear that they are very close friends.
