Millennium Forest News from October 11th

The intense heat had passed and on a clear autumn afternoon, we headed to the Millennium Forest and came across some ducks taking a nap!
The ducks sleep comfortably with their beaks tucked into their fluffy feathers.
If you look closely, you can see that their eyes are open. This is a sign of hemispheric sleep, a bird habit.
Ducks can alternate between sleeping in the left and right hemispheres of their brains to keep them alert for predators, which is why they sleep with one eye open.

The butterfly flying energetically through the forest in the warm weather is called the purple martins.
The purple martin butterfly, a member of the lycaenid butterfly family, appears brown overall, but once it opens its wings, a beautiful purple color aspect.
Once it sticks to the ground, it blends in completely and becomes familiar with it.

The foxtail grass is swaying in the autumn breeze.
It is called "cat toy" because cats play with it as it sways in the wind, and is loved by many people.

On Thursday, September 21st, second-graders from Koto Ward's Hiraku Elementary School, along with their teachers and parents, visited Fujikura-Kiba Millennium Woods as part of their "Town Exploration" class.
On the day, we explained Fujikura's business activities and the Millennium Forest, and then answered questions that the elementary school students had thought up through their prior study.
