Technology Areas/Product Groups
For future high-density and high-capacity transmission, Optical Fiber we are developing Multi-Core Fiber (MCF), which has multiple cores in one fiber, for practical use. Fujikura is continuing research and development to propose MCF technology as a total solution customer including not only fibers but also peripheral technologies such as cables, connectors, and fusion splicing.
We were the first company to develop manufacturing technology to fabricate 600 km of MCF from a single base material with high precision dimensions, and we are working on the development of even larger sizes. We have also demonstrated the advanced nature of Fujikura's R&D activities by presenting the results of a field laying verification between buildings where MCF cables with 28 8-fiber 4-core MCFs mounted were laid in ducts and 576 input/output devices were fusion-connected at both ends of the cable at an international conference. We are also working on technology to application MCF into a 24-fiber MPO connector that can connect 24 fibers at once, enabling 96 cores to be accommodated in a single connector at high density. Furthermore, by application adding MCF to SWR®/WTC®, Fujikura's thin, high-density Optical Fiber cable technology, it is possible to further increase transmission capacity and further reduce cable diameter, and is expected to application be used where high-density Optical Fiber transmission networks are required, such as data center.
On the other hand, as the volume of information and communication increases, the demand for electric power is also becoming a global issue. Optical Fiber The reduction of power consumption can be achieved by lowering the loss of the transmission line and the connection loss at a huge number of locations.
Furthermore, replacing the range of information processing in areas where transmission was carried out with metal with light will also lead to a large reduction in power consumption. We will continue to develop in this area.
