60 GHz mmWave Wireless Communications Module demonstrated effectiveness when application to the backhaul of a local 5G communication system

December 7, 2023
Fujikura Ltd.

Fujikura Ltd. (Director, President and CEO: Okada Naoki) provided a wireless device (hereinafter referred to as "Outdoor Evaluation Kit") equipped with 60 GHz mmWave Wireless Communications Module to ABIT Corporation (Remote Construction Demonstration Event (Construction DX Challenge 2023)) hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.
Its effectiveness was demonstrated in a demonstration in which it was application as the backhaul *1 of a highly reliable local 5G communications system.

・Effectiveness as a backhaul was demonstrated in a construction equipment demonstration.

This demonstration was organized by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism with the aim of advancing construction technology, and was held from November 20th at the Construction DX Experimental Field in Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Prefecture.
For this project, Fujitsu provided ABIT with an outdoor evaluation kit equipped with 60 GHz mmWave Wireless Communications Module, which was used as a wireless backhaul connecting local 5G base stations with the core network.
In the demonstration, a highly reliable, low-latency, 'uninterrupted wireless environment' was created using a local 5G base station and outdoor evaluation kit, and video transmission through this enabled smooth operation of construction equipment from remote locations.
The demonstration demonstrated that Toshiba's 60 GHz mmWave Wireless Communications Module, which strong point / feature long-distance, large-capacity, and low-latency communications, can function effectively as a wireless backhaul for a local 5G communications system.

Conventionally, building a local 5G communications system requires laying of new Optcal Fiber lines for backhaul, but by application wireless connections, significant cost reductions can be achieved.

Local 5G communication systems can be configured under optimal conditions for each user to achieve ultra-high speeds, high reliability, low latency, and multiple simultaneous connections, and are expected to be an essential tool for solving issues in local communities using digital transformation. Going forward, we will continue to contribute to the spread of local 5G communication systems by providing this module.

< 60 GHz mmWave Wireless Communications Module >
This is a small millimeter-wave wireless communication module that can be embedded into equipment and uses a "high-gain phased array antenna" that achieves high-speed wireless communication in the 60 GHz band. It has a compact design that integrates wireless protocol processing (baseband) functions and RF circuit functions including the antenna.
This module features world-class performance, including "automatic beamforming, a throughput of over 1 Gbps at a distance of 500 m, and low latency on the order of milliseconds," and is shipped with a technical standards conformity certificate (Technical Compliance Certificate) *2 strong point / feature by a certification body. By incorporating this module that has already obtained a Technical Compliance Certificate, it is possible to develop communication and industrial equipment that uses the 60 GHz band in a short period of time and at low cost.

*1 Backhaul
In a communications network, a relay line connects a base station to the backbone network.

*2 Technical standards conformity certification
This is a certification that specific wireless equipment (wireless equipment specified by an ordinance of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications as being for use in small-scale wireless stations, including mobile phones and wireless LAN devices) conformity with the technical standards of the Radio Law.
