Developed high-sensitivity 60 GHz millimeter-wave wireless communication module - Acquired experimental test station license, started various communication experiments in the field -

February 6, 2023
Fujikura Ltd.

Fujikura Ltd. (Director, President and CEO Okada Naoki) has developed a high-sensitivity 60 GHz millimeter-wave wireless communication module (hereinafter referred to as the "high-sensitivity module") that achieves long-distance transmission performance of the kilometer level, and has obtained an experimental test station license *1 to begin various communications experiments in the field.

The developed high-sensitivity module has twice the number of antenna elements compared to conventional models to improve antenna gain, and the frequency is limited to 61GHz to 71GHz, where attenuation due to oxygen absorption is small, and the antenna has been optimally designed to achieve long-distance transmission. In addition, the communication signal bandwidth has been narrowed to 1/2 or 1/4, increasing the transmission power density per unit frequency, enabling even longer-distance transmission.
In Europe and the United States, the frequency band supported by the high-sensitivity module can be used without a license *3. Therefore, taking advantage of this long-distance performance, we will promote sales expansion mainly in Europe and the United States for applications that require long-distance transmission, such as backhaul *4 and mobile communications.

【point】
・Developed a highly sensitive wireless module that achieves long-distance transmission performance of up to kilometers using millimeter waves
・Starting communication experiments in the field
・Promote sales expansion in Europe and the US

The high-sensitivity module will be exhibited at booth #5J56 in Hall 5 at the MWC Barcelona 2023 exhibition to be held in Spain from February 27 to March 2, 2023.
If you are at the venue, please stop by our booth.
Wireless communications using millimeter waves are attracting attention as a way to build broadband networks around the world.
As ultra-high speed, low latency, and large capacity communications are expected around the world, we will continue to contribute to the development of equipment that will enable high-speed, large-capacity communications.

*1 Experimental test station license:
It is defined as "a radio station established for the purpose of conducting experiments for the development of science or technology, tests on the efficiency of radio wave utilization, or surveys on the demand for radio wave utilization, and which is not for practical use," and it is possible to establish such a station for conducting experiments, tests, and surveys for such purposes.

*2 Oxygen absorption:
A phenomenon in which electromagnetic waves in the vicinity of 60 GHz are absorbed by oxygen molecules in the air, resulting in significant attenuation.

*3 No license required
In Europe and the US, the 57-71 GHz frequency band is approved for use without a license, whereas in Japan, the 57-66 GHz band can be used without a license, but the 66-71 GHz band requires a license.

*4 Backhaul:
Relay circuits connecting telecommunications business' backbone networks and base stations
