Environmental Audit

Internal Environmental Audits

Fujikura has been voluntarily carrying out internal audits mainly at its manufacturing facilities to ensure compliance with environment-related national laws, local ordinances, and standards, thereby preventing environmental pollution and encouraging environment-related improvements at the facilities. We select sites to be audited at the beginning of each fiscal year, and an executive in charge of the environment along with members from the Human Resource & General Affairs Division, the Quality Assurance Division and the Board of Auditors visit them to perform the audits.

Environmental Impacts of Business Activities

The following shows the major environmental impacts of business activities conducted by Fujikura Ltd. and other domestic Group companies in fiscal 2014.

Environmental Impacts of Business Activities

Environmental Education

We provide all employees with environmental education to encourage them to conduct activities to conserve energy and resources through recycling and protect the global environment in their daily business operations. Specifically, we hold environmental seminars as part of the training for new employees, conduct OJT at our plants, provide ISO 14001 education for each department in our plants, and give special training for environment-related business operations on a regular basis, thereby increasing employees' environmental awareness.

Head office

Study meeting on environmental activities held at the head office

In the head office district, we hold a study meeting on environmental activities every April or at the beginning of each new fiscal year. Also, in April 2015, about 20 workplace representatives (departmental environmental managers) were convened to share the results of the activities conducted by the Fujikura Group in fiscal 2014 and to be briefed on the fiscal 2015 activity plans. Further, in the head office district, we participate in a public-private cooperation project implemented by the Tokyo metropolitan government to conserve biodiversity. Under the project, employees monitor living organisms in Fujikura-Kiba Millennium Woods located within the district. By observing insects, birds and plants in the monitoring activity, employees are able to deepen their understanding of biodiversity.

Plant

Environment and safety training at the Suzuka Plant

The Suzuka Plant provided all employees working in the Suzuka district with environment and safety training this year as well. The training, which efficiently focuses on both the environment and safety, was provided on 10 occasions, attracting the participation of around 350 employees. After a speech given by the head of the plant, participants were briefed on the environment and safety plans set for this fiscal year and the important features regarding the plans. The plant will earnestly implement measures towards "zero disasters and incidents."

Group companies

Environmental education provided to new employees at Fujikura Automotive Asia

Fujikura Automotive Asia provides new employees with environmental education as part of their initial training. Specifically, the company teaches new employees that environmental problems could occur in their daily lives, introducing recent cases of frequent heavy rains, very hot weather, and pest plagues, while also instructing them on what they should do to help maintain the global environment in their business and private lives. Further, they are told to always keep in mind the necessity of conserving energy, reducing CO2 emissions, and fostering zero waste emissions.

Education on specified chemical substances at Aomori Fujikura Kanaya

Aomori Fujikura Kanaya conducted an educational seminar on specified chemical substances, mainly targeting members of departments using organic solvents and other chemicals. The seminar was held in October 2014 before enforcement of the revised Ordinance on Prevention of Hazards Due to Specified Chemical Substances on November 1. The company has been proactively fostering safe, environment-friendly manufacturing. For example, the company checked whether the number of specified chemical substances would increase and whether the current management method would remain appropriate after revision of the ordinance. It has also reviewed its use of organic solvents and other hazardous substances.

Emergency response drill conducted by Kyoei High Opt

Following the disaster control drill conducted in September 2014, Kyoei High Opt conducted an emergency response drill targeting all related personnel, assuming a scenario in which adhesive agent containers had fallen while being transported from the hazardous substances warehouse to the production line causing leakage of the agent. In the past, the company conducted such emergency drills only targeting workers who actually handled the hazardous substances. Recently, however, employees engaged in other related operations have also been included in the target in order to raise awareness of all staff of the importance of these drills. The company will continue conducting drills to further increase employees' environmental awareness and to prevent emergencies from occurring.
