Awarded the Conference Prize at APMC 2022

December 20, 2022
Fujikura Ltd.

A paper written by our millimeter-wave team has won the Conference Prize (APMC 2022 Prize) at the 2022 Asia-Pacific Microwave Conference (APMC 2022)※1 which is one of major international conferences in the microwave and millimeter-wave fields.
The APMC Prize is awarded to the best papers at the conference, and the first author is Chihiro Kamidaki, who belongs to Electronic Technologies R&D Center, Fujikura Ltd. (President and CEO Naoki Okada). The paper proposed a power amplifier that realizes high output power while keeping low distortion on linearity and can be applied to the so-called 5G (the 5th generation mobile communication system) millimeter-wave base stations.

[Main features]
・Achieves high output power while suppressing distortion of millimeter-wave signals and increase in DC power consumption.
・Miniaturizes the area even with higher output power to make a cost-effective millimeter-wave IC for 5G base stations.

Title: A 24-30 GHz Power Amplifier with >20 dBm Psat and <0.1 dB AM-AM Distortion for 5G Applications
Authors: Chihiro Kamidaki, Yuma Okuyama and Tatsuo Kubo (Fujikura Ltd., Japan); Wooram Lee, Caglar Ozdag and Bodhisatwa Sadhu (IBM, U.S.A.); Yo Yamaguchi and Ning Guan (Fujikura Ltd., Japan)

Fujikura has licensed millimeter-wave IC technology from IBM in the United States of America and has developed "FutureAccess™※2" which is a 28-GHz band millimeter-wave phased array antenna module (PAAM) for 5G base stations. We have been providing samples since April 2022. By improving the power amplifier used in the sample, we have achieved higher output power while suppressing distortion of millimeter-wave signals and increase in DC power consumption. Area miniaturization has also been achieved by optimizing other circuits together.
Millimeter-wave technology is being implemented for 5G networks around the world. We will continue to develop millimeter-wave products to contribute to the construction of the 5G infrastructure.

  • 1 APMC 2022
APMC is an international academic conference held annually to develop innovative microwave/millimeter-wave devices and related technologies in the Asia-Pacific region. It is one of the world's major conferences, along with IMS (IEEE International Microwave Symposium) in the United States of America and EuMW (European Microwave Week) in Europe. APMC 2022 was held in Yokohama from November 29th to December 2nd, 2022.
  • 2 Phased Array Antenna Module (PAAM) “FutureAccess™”
FutureAccess™ has been developed by Fujikura in 2019 after licensing millimeter-wave IC technology from IBM in the United States of America.
