5G millimeter-wave phased array antenna modules for infrastructure applications presented at ISSCC 2022, the foremost international conference on integrated circuits

Fujikura Ltd.

Fujikura Ltd. (President and CEO: Masahiko Ito) announced today that it will present results from a joint research development with International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) Research at ISSCC (International Solid-State Circuits Conference) on 24th February, 2022.
This announcement highlights two key innovations in the Phased Array Antenna Module (PAAM) targeting the 28 GHz 5G-NR bands for 5G millimeter wave infrastructure applications.

1)An on-chip beam calculator enables support for 100X more beams:

State-of-the-art PAAMs use on-chip beam tables and can create phased array beams in the directions specified by the table. However, beam tables typically support only a few hundred beams.
In contrast, our PAAM uses ICs that can quickly calculate and create beams in more than 30,000 desired directions, providing 100X finer coverage compared to a beam table-based approach.

2)IC techniques enable low power consumption:

By optimizing the internal design of the IC, we have achieved a PAAM peak power added efficiency of 20% enabling one of the lowest power consumption levels in the industry. The low power consumption helps to solve potential thermal challenges when designing mobile base stations.

ISSCC is widely regarded as the most prestigious international conference for semiconductor-based integrated circuit technology, and the selection of our 5G phased array research for presentation at ISSCC provides industry-wide recognition to the world class performance of our PAAM. Moreover, the work was also selected for a demonstration at the conference, to be held on February 23rd.

This year (2022), ISSCC will be a virtual conference similar to last year's ISSCC due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The IBM and Fujikura presentation will be held in Session 27.3.
