Reduction of Atmospheric Emission of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC)

VOC is the general term for organic compounds that volatilize or become gas in the atmosphere. They include chemicals like thinners and alcohols widely used in factories. In addition to their effects on human health, VOCs are said to be the causative agents of suspended particulate matter and photochemical oxidants.
In the Fujikura Group Environmental Management Activity Guidelines, Fujikura and domestic group companies set a goal of reducing VOC emissions to the atmosphere in FY2019 by “major VOC emission intensity (per sales) of 4% or more compared to FY2015. Improvement (improvement of 1% or more per year) ”.

In FY 2019, VOC emissions at Fujikura and domestic group companies were 65.1 tons. It was reduced by 11.1% compared to 75.2t in FY2015. However, VOC emissions intensity was 27.2 trillion yen / 100 million yen, an improvement of 2.4% compared to FY2015, and the target could not be achieved. Although emissions have increased and VOC emissions intensity has deteriorated since FY2016, we have continued efforts to reduce them, and in FY2019 we were able to reduce them to the same level as in FY2015.
Recent efforts include (1) reducing the amount of ethanol used by improving the cleaning method of manufacturing equipment, (2) recovering IPA from exhaust in the manufacturing process, (3) introducing alternatives for cleaning toluene in manufacturing equipment, and (4) discontinuing production of products using VOC.
