Environmental Management System

Global Environment Activity Promotion System

The overall environmental conservation activities of the Fujikura Group are managed globally by the Environmental Committee, which is the Environmental-Site Working Group under the Group CSR Committee. The chairperson of the committee is the officer in charge of the environment (Senior Vice President & Member of the Board). The committee is responsible for the discussion and resolution of issues related to the Group's environmental management including climate change. Specific activities include setting annual and medium-term goals, formulating plans according to these goals and monitoring the progress of plans. And it receives approval from the managing director, who is the environmental officer, and reports to the CSR Committee chaired by the president & CEO. For addressing priority themes, special teams which support the planning of measures and ensure implementation of measures across the Group are organized under the committee as necessary.

Fujikura Group ECO-PASS Environmental Information Collection System

Since fiscal 2010, we launched the Fujikura Group ECO-PASS system to increase the efficiency of environmental data collection. In order to encourage the sharing and analysis of this information across the Group to further reduce our environmental impacts, we have visualized the information, including data about our environmental impacts and the results of our environmental activities.

Currently, there are 22 consolidated companies in Japan (96% of domestic consolidated companies), 4 non-consolidated companies, and 39 overseas consolidated companies (57% of overseas consolidated companies) utilizing ECO-PASS in their environmental data management.

Environmental Education

The Fujikura group involves each of our employees in energy saving and recycling activities, implementing environmental education so that all employees work to protect the Earth's environment during their daily work routine. The Fujikura group tries to raise awareness in the lectures on environment held during new employee training, by regularly holding OJT in the workplace as well as ISO14001 education company-wide and in each section, and specialized education for each job.

Educational Activities at Headquarters and Business Sites

(Headquarter) Environmental Activity Briefing Session

In the head office area, we hold briefing sessions on environmental activities every April. In 2017, 22 representatives of each workplace (environment promoters) attended and explained the plan for fiscal 2018, along with the report on the activity results for fiscal 2017. Going forward, we will continue our efforts to save energy, reduce waste, and reduce the volume of paper purchased.

(Sakura Works) Implementation of New Employee Training

At the Sakura Works, we are implementing environmental education for people who have been assigned. Education was carried out in FY2017 also in April (employment hiring personnel) and June (hiring personnel).

(Sakura Works) Implementation of Waste Classification Guidance

At the Sakura Works, various waste materials are emitted from R&D departments and others. In order to properly outsource those wastes, we conduct waste classification guidance three times a week (about 120 times a year) at the waste place. We are trying to prevent inappropriate waste disposal and reaffirm the importance of sorting.

(Suzuka Works) Implementation of General Environmental Education

The Suzuka Works implements general environmental education for all staff every year. Also in fiscal 2017 we held ten times from May 23 to June 7 and 405 people attended. We have learned the results of the previous year's activity, the activity policy / activity plan of this fiscal year, the environmental topics. Through training, we gained understanding and cooperation in energy conservation, waste reduction, etc., and also worked to raise the environmental awareness of each employee.

(Numazu Works) Freshman Education in 2017

On Numazu Works, on April 4, we taught two key employees joining the company in fiscal 2017 on environmental initiatives and education on Fujikura Group CSR activity guidelines. After questioning and answering in the training room, we observed the type of waste discharged from the workplace and the final disposal site of the factory waste and confirmed what kind of waste was discharged from the workplace.

Also, on May 9th, we conducted education and training on the initiatives of the Numazu Works environment during Numazu Works Practice at Planning Specialist in 2017. We confirmed the characteristics of the waste at our office by looking at the material explanation and the actual situation of the waste at the work site.

(Ishioka Works) ISO 14001: 2015 Education

At the Ishioka Works, in order to nurture internal auditors for the 2015 version of ISO 14001, we continued to hold internal auditor training seminars in September in March. The instructor was done by an ISO certification body and an employee qualified as a judge. From the participants "It was easy to understand with the specific explanation directly connected to the work, because we understand the situation inside the company for the internal lecturer," it was popular.

Environmental Education Activities at Group Companies

(Yonezawa Electric Wire) Implementation of Environmental Emergency Response Training

At Yonezawa Electric Wire, as an activity of the Environment Committee, we carry out emergency response drills once a year assuming emergency situations. We conduct training every year on surveillance at the terminal drainage terminal and response to emergency when pumping water to first-class rivers flowing around the site.

Every year we pick up garbage from roads and parking lots in the northern industrial park of Koriyama city with the Koriyama Factory.

(Fujikura Solutions) Sorting Waste of Waste, Environmental Beautification Activities

Fujikura Solutions, as a new entrance education, conducted a difference in household and company separation rules for garbage, the importance of sorting, a method of sorting waste and environmental beautification activities around the facility.

(Fujikura Precision) Emergency Response Test Implementation

Oil leaked from the stopped motorcycle and training was carried out assuming the case that the oil surely reached the rainwater gate within a few hours if leaving the present condition. As a result, in each treatment step, correspondence was accurate and there was no problem.

(Numazu Copper Refining and Rolling) Education on Environmental Management Activities

In the general assembly meeting in June (during the Environmental Month), we explained the Fujikura group environmental activity guidelines, covered consistency with Numazu Weld in Fiscal 2005 environmental targets and implementation plan, and factory efforts for all employees I carried out reeducation.

(Numazu Copper Refining and Rolling) Training for Transitioning to ISO Standard for Internal Auditors

We held seminars by external lecturers for internal auditors in September 2017 to cope with the transition to the 2015 version of the ISO 14001 standard. 17 people participated on the day, deepened their understanding by giving detailed explanation of the contents of the 2015 version of the standard and points of major revisions.

Environmental Audit

We carry out regular environmental audits on each of the group’s domestic manufacturing sites. In addition to examining the extent of compliance with laws and regulations, and examining the facilities, waste, and dangerous goods management, these audits also investigate actions to reduce environmental impact, provide guidance and support as necessary, and work to standardize and improve environmental conservation activities at all of our manufacturing sites.

Environmental Accounting

The Fujikura Group discloses environmental accounting data in line with the Japanese Ministry of the Environment's Environmental Accounting Guidelines 2005. By using this tool, we can identify the costs and effects of environmental protection activities, evaluate improvements made through such activities, and make use of evaluation results.

Compliance with Regulations

To comply with regulations, Fujikura sets even higher standards. With daily monitoring, regular measurements, and environmental inspections, Fujikura is reducing emissions of chemicals and other substances into the atmosphere and water sources. Also, by strengthening equipment maintenance, and implementing equipment measures in advance, we have thorough plans to prevent overages against our standards.

Environmental Activities and Near Miss Collection System

According to the Fujikura Group Environmental Problem Report Operation Manual (established in 2005), troubleshooting information on Fujikura and Group companies' environmental issues is quickly consolidated and information is shared to prevent recurrence of similar problems.

Response to Environmental Grievances

Number of Cases in Fiscal 2017 · Response Measures

In fiscal 2017, there were no complaints about the Group's environment. In the past three years (from FY2014 to FY2016), one complaint was received in FY2016, but after making countermeasures, we informed our business sites and group companies about recurrence prevention.

Violation of FY2017

In fiscal 2017, one group company had a nonconformity to drain standards (BOD regulation value exceeded). Immediately after provisional measures were taken under the guidance of the prefecture, we submitted an improvement plan at a later date and it was accepted. Improvement and reporting were carried out according to the plan, and the BOD value stabilized within the regulated value. We also informed the Fujikura Plant and Group companies about preventing recurrence.

Presence of Fines and Sanctions

There were no fines and sanctions at Fujikura Plants and Group companies due to violation of laws related to the environment.
