Environmental Audit

Internal Environmental Audits

We carry out regular environmental audits on each of the group’s domestic manufacturing sites. In addition to examining the extent of compliance with laws and regulations, and examining the facilities, waste, and dangerous goods management, these audits also investigate actions toreduce environmental impact, provide guidance and support as necessary, and work to standardize and improve environmental conservation activities at all of our manufacturing sites.

Environmental Accounting

The Fujikura Group discloses environmental accounting data in line with the Japanese Ministry of the Environment's Environmental Accounting Guidelines 2005. Environmental accounting serves as a tool to evaluate the effects of environmental protection activities in a quantitative manner. By using this tool, we can identify the costs and effects of environmental protection activities, evaluate improvements made through such activities, and make use of evaluation results.

Environmental Impacts of Business Activities

The following shows the major environmental impacts of business activities conducted by Fujikura Ltd. and other domestic Group companies in FY2015.

Environmental Education

We provide all employees with environmental education to encourage them to conduct activities to conserve energy and resources through recycling and protect the global environment in their daily business operations. Specifically, we hold environmental seminars as part of the training for new employees, conduct OJT at our plants, provide ISO 14001 education for each department in our plants, and give special training for environment-related business operations on a regular basis, thereby increasing employees' environmental awareness.

Head office

Study meeting on environmental activities held at the head office

We hold a briefing session every April at our company headquarters, to report on the environmental action plan for the new financial year, as well as the results of the previous year. In 2015 we also held a briefing that explained the results of 2015 and the plan for 2016 to the managers responsible for environmental concerns at their respective workplaces. Going forward, in addition to taking action for energy conservation and waste reduction, we will be adopting new measures to further invigorate our activities.

Works

Sakura Works/Environmental emergency response training

The Environmental Safety Division at our Sakura works carries out emergency response training and procedural reviews once a year, in preparation for hypothetical, possible emergency situations. On November 30, 2015, they conducted a training exercise, in partnership with Fuji Materials, based on an imagined waste oil leakage at the indoor hazardous materials repository. During the session, water was used to emulate a waste oil leakage and create a realistic leakage scenario, and staff were trained in blocking the leak using sandbags. Consequently, we are sure of both staff response to potential waste oil leaks, as well as proper adherence to response procedure. In the future, prompt and certain response is possible in worst-case scenaries, even though the offices aim for zero-incident operations.

Numazu Works/Enviromental education for new employees

On April 4 and May 10 at the Numazu works, six new employees underwent environmental education, focusing on the types, volumes, handling methods, and current recycling conditions of industrial waste. These new employees were also educated on the monitoring items for the factory wastewater treatment site, as well as how to check the separation of industrial waste and general waste at the factory site.

Ishioka Works/Education for raising awareness of the environment

At the request of group companies located within the offices, the Ishioka works engage in environmental education (education for raising awareness of the environment) for new hires. During their environmental education, new employees learn about how the environmental policy ties in with their assigned duties. In concrete terms, they learn about how the environment benefits when they do their work efficiently, how failing to adhere to procedures might affect the surrounding environment, and how to execute their duties in a way that profits the local environment.

Group Companies

DDK Ltd./Enviromental education for new employees

Every year, DDK Ltd. carries out general environmental education to increase environmental awareness among new hires. The curriculum includes an outline of ISO 14001, regulation compliance for the prevention of environmental accidents, management of chemical substances contained in products (including RoHS directives), and more. This year, two new hires were given an opportunity to think about what they can do for environmental conservation through acquiring fundamental environmental knowledge.

Fujikura Solutions Ltd./Waste disposal education for all employees

Following transferal on October 1, 2015, Fujikura Solutions (formerly Syscom) held briefing sessions for all employees on waste disposal, waste storage spaces, etc. The company's future efforts in regards to waste disposal will involve taking action to further increase their number of non-waste materials, which are limited to two items (cardboard, paper) at present.

Numazu Copper Refining and Rolling Co., Ltd./Emergency response Training

Numazu Copper Refining and Rolling created a Specified Emergency Situation List and held training, targeting all employees. In 2015, the refinery carried out the Outdoor Dangerous Goods Tank Repository Spill Procedure, based on the hypothetical scenario of a pump valve oil leak going into a dike during the supply of ethanol from an outdoor dangerous goods tank.

Regulation compliance

Regulation compliance

Going beyond mere compliance to laws and regulations, we have set stricter voluntary standards, implemented daily monitoring, periodic measurements, and environmental audits, and we have reduced the emissions of chemical substances and other substances into surrounding atmospheric and hydrological systems. In addition, by strengthening facility maintenance and management, and implementing countermeasures in advance, we aim to have thorough management that ensures we will not exceed our voluntary baseline values.

Regulation compliance results (violations in 2015)

In the FY2015, one company within the group had an incident where water containing oil was leaked out of the working premises. All concerned parties and locations were notified immediately, and spill prevention measures were carried out according to instructions. As there were delays in detection owing to the previous system of daily periodic checks, going forward, our group will be monitoring wastewater constantly as a preventive measure against future leaks. In addition, other group companies have also reexamined incident risks and carried out leak countermeasures.
