This Fujikura Group CSR Integrated Report 2015 is intended to be read by our stakeholders.
As we did last year, we created the CSR Integrated Report based on the seven core subjects and classification method of the ISO 26000 international standard on social responsibility, and also disclosed nonfinancial information intelligibly in the report in line with the International Integrated Reporting Framework published by the International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC). Specifically, we worked to enhance the content of the report as described below.
-
1.We further fostered the disclosure of nonfinancial information for "integrated reporting," based on the International Integrated Reporting Framework.
-
2.We continued to make preparations for the full introduction in 2016 of the fourth version of the Sustainability Reporting Guidelines (G4) published by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), while striving to improve our information disclosure and reporting quality.
-
3.We have been implementing a three-year plan to obtain assurance from an independent third party for the CSR Integrated Report 2015. In May 2015, we received an inspection on the reliability of our CO2 emission and water use data by an evaluation company at the Sakura Plant, which is our main manufacturing base, and subsequently received a verification report (third-party assurance report) from the evaluator, as shown at the end of this report.
-
4.This year marks Fujikura’s 130th anniversary, and to celebrate this milestone, we produced a feature article that compares Fujikura at the time of its founding, when it was a personal business, with the present Fujikura, a global company operating in more than 20 countries around the world.
-
5.As for "9 Human Rights and Labour Practices," we changed the hierarchical classification that we had been adopting for the chapter for 10 years to focus more on human rights, diversity, work-life balance, and other issues that are garnering much attention from society.
In addition, in order to help stakeholders deepen their understanding of our CSR activities, we describe a range of new initiatives online (in the HTML format), as shown below.

Process to deciding on the Editorial Policy
The Fujikura Group began deliberating the creation of the new report by collecting information about the issues identified in the publication of the previous report, opinions of third-party experts, comments by stakeholders, and trends in the related guidelines. Subsequently, discussions were made at the meetings of the in-house editors, CSR experts and the CSR Committee composed of executives (Management Committee) to decide on the editorial policy for the new report. It took about six months for us to complete the process from information collection to deciding on the editorial policy.
Continuing efforts for the CSR Integrated Report
The Fujikura Group has been disclosing information to a range of stakeholders on various occasions and through a variety of media tools. Following the publication in 2013 of the first version of the International Integrated Reporting Framework as the guidelines for the new information disclosure method known as "integrated reporting," we decided to create a report in line with the Framework. We thus created the first Fujikura Group CSR Integrated Report in 2014, aiming to improve the reporting content compared with our previous CSR reports. It is our policy to disclose both financial and nonfinancial information in an intelligible manner in our CSR Integrated Report, including information about the activities we are conducting to make the creation of a sustainable society compatible with the achievement of sustainable growth as a company. This report is indeed made based on this Group policy, in which we report our activities conducted in fiscal 2014 and future perspectives in reference to the integrated reporting guidelines. We will continue to improve and enhance the content of our integrated reports for even clearer reporting, thereby meeting the expectations of society.
Response to the Third-Party Opinion
- Fujikura Ltd. is expected to communicate in its future integrated reports how the Group has created unique value by further fostering the idea of integrated reporting.
- Last year, we published our first CSR Integrated Report to provide more nonfinancial information than our previous annual CSR reports in response to requests from shareholders and investors. Subsequently, we restudied the concept, definitions and principles of the International Integrated Reporting Framework and added a new section on "integrated reporting and thinking" to the first integrated report. Moreover, we examined other similar guidelines as reference materials for our activities. These included the United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI), the Stewardship Code, Japan’s Stewardship Code, new guidelines of the GRI (G4), and the FTSE4Good Index for socially responsible investment. Further, our CSR Committee made preparations and built up a necessary system for the introduction of Japan's Corporate Governance Code. We will continue to enhance and improve our integrated reporting and show how our Group is creating value, thereby meeting the needs and expectations of society.
- Specific measures need to be implemented by the Group to foster the use of diverse human resources, including women.
- In response to this requirement, we changed the hierarchical classification that we had been adopting for one chapter of our annual CSR report over 10 years, aiming to describe our diversity promotion measures more clearly to stakeholders, including those implemented to encourage women to display their abilities. As a result, in this report, we have made easier-to-understand explanations for stakeholders in "9-1 Human Rights," "9-2 Diversity," and "9-3 Work-Life Balance" under the chapter entitled "Human Rights and Labour Practices." We created the report based on the seven core subjects of the ISO 26000 international standard on social responsibility, with Chapter 9 titled after one of the subjects. Further, in this report, we have included numerical data to clearly show how women are working proactively in the Fujikura Group.
- (1) This year, we examined measures to further enhance the content of the CSR Integrated Report 2015 to be made as our second annual CSR integrated report. In the process, we referred to the following to foster the disclosure of our ESG information: the United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) (2006), the Stewardship Code (2010), Japan’s Stewardship Code (2014), new guidelines of the GRI (G4), the first version of the International Integrated Reporting Framework of the IIRC, the FTSE4Good Index for socially responsible investment, the revised EICC Code of Conduct (version 5.0), and the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP). In addition, we began implementing information disclosure initiatives with regard to the Corporate Governance Code.
- (2) In this CSR Integrated Report, we have included information on the time we spent and investments we made for human resource development.
- (3) On each chapter title page of the Report, we have listed the chapter-related activity plans we made for fiscal 2014 and the activities that we actually conducted during the year.
