Development and Sales Launch of "1728-fiber Air Blown WTC™"
Fujikura Ltd. (Director, President and CEO: Naoki Okada) has developed a new ultra‑thin, high‑density fiber optic cable for air‑blown installation, the "1728‑fiber Air Blown WTC™." The product incorporates Fujikura’s proprietary 12‑fiber Spider Web Ribbon™ (SWR™*1), which enables simultaneous multi‑fiber fusion splicing, and has been added to the lineup of Wrapping Tube Cable™ (WTC™*2) and is now available for sale.
[Background of Development]
Within data centers, the adoption of ultra‑high‑fiber‑count WTC™ is already progressing. In addition, demand for fiber optic cables is expanding for data center interconnect (DCI) applications that connect existing data centers.
Fujikura has been developing and commercializing Air Blown WTC™, which enables the rapid deployment of high‑speed, high‑capacity networks. However, as the volume of data in hyperscale data centers continues to increase rapidly, demand for higher transmission capacity in DCI is also rising.
In response to these market needs, Fujikura has developed the new 1728‑fiber Air Blown WTC™.
[Features of the 1728‑fiber Air Blown WTC™]
In its development, Fujikura leveraged the design technologies cultivated through the 864‑fiber Air Blown WTC™ and optimized the cable dimensions. As a result, the cable is smaller in diameter and lighter than conventional outdoor SWR™ / WTC™ cables with the same fiber count, while maintaining the mechanical properties required for air‑blown installation, including resistance to buckling.
In installation tests using microducts, the cable was successfully blown over a distance of up to 1,000 meters.
By achieving 1728 fibers—double the previous maximum of 864 fibers—the cable enables a reduction of approximately half in the number of cables required per installation distance, contributing to more efficient and cost‑effective network construction.
Fujikura will continue to contribute to the realization of a more advanced digital society through the development of innovative technologies and high‑quality products.

*Spider Web Ribbon™ (SWR™) and Wrapping Tube Cable™ (WTC™) are trademarks of Fujikura Ltd.
*1 SWR™ (Spider Web Ribbon™)
An optical fiber ribbon developed using Fujikura’s proprietary technology. It features a structure in which single optical fibers are bonded intermittently, providing excellent flexibility. It allows for high-density implementation within fiber optic cables, contributing to thinner and higher-density fiber optic cables.
*2 WTC™ (Wrapping Tube Cable™)
Ultra-thin, high-density fiber optic cable developed by Fujikura using proprietary technology that implements SWR™. It features a simple structure in which the optical fiber ribbons are wrapped with tape. Compared to conventional fiber optic cables such as the slot structure mainly used domestically or the loose tube structure common overseas, it has a thinner and higher-density design, enabling the use of existing ducts and significantly shortening construction periods.
