"Fujikura-Kiba Millennium Woods" certified as a "Nature Coexistence Site" by the Ministry of the Environment in the second half of 2023

March 29, 2024
Fujikura Ltd.

Fujikura Ltd. (Director, President and CEO: Okada Naoki)'s bio-garden "Fujikura-Kiba Millennium Woods" (a green space within the grounds of Fukagawa Gatharia W3 Building) in Kiba, Koto Ward, has been certified as a "Nature Coexistence Site" by the Ministry of the Environment, and was presented with a certificate on March 26th.

The award ceremony

The "Nature Coexistence Sites" are areas that have biodiversity value and where biodiversity conservation is being promoted through various initiatives by business, private organizations and individuals, and local governments, and the government will launch a certification system in 2023.
As efforts progress towards achieving the global goal of effectively conserving more than 30% of land and ocean ecosystems as healthy ecosystems by 2030 (hereinafter referred to as 30by30), the government has positioned "nature coexistence sites" as a key measure.

Although "Fujikura-Kiba Millennium Woods" is located in an urban area, it has a biotope function that prioritizes the protection of wildlife. It is also valued as a valuable green space that serves as a place of relaxation for local residents, and is expected to have a ripple effect in many areas as a model example of environmentally friendly corporate activities.
In the future, the area is scheduled to be registered in an international database as an OECM *1 (Other Effective area-based Conservation Measures: areas that contribute to biodiversity conservation outside of publicly protected areas such as national parks).

Fujikura-Kiba Millennium Woods

In 2017, Fujikura-Kiba Millennium Woods registered as an "Excellent Green Space" under the Edo Green Space Registration System, in which the Tokyo Metropolitan Government registers and publicizes green spaces that proactively plant native species and work to conserve biodiversity.
For this certification, an agreement for mutual cooperation and collaboration between the "Edo Green Registered Green Space" system and the "Nature Coexistence Site" certification system was concluded in September 2023, the first time such an agreement was signed by a local government in the country, and the application was submitted with support from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, including preliminary screening.

Going forward, the entire Group will continue to strive to contribute to a sustainable global environment.

*1 OECM (Other Effective area-based Conservation Measures)
It is internationally defined as "geographically defined areas, other than protected areas, that are governed and managed in a manner that will continually achieve positive long-term outcomes for the in situ conservation of biodiversity, together with associated ecosystem functions and services, and, where appropriate, cultural, spiritual, socio-economic and other site-related values." It is an area that can effectively conserve biodiversity, even though it is not a protected area such as a national park. Specifically, this applies to Satoyama, water source forests, and urban nature.
