In collaboration with Avnet, Sony has released a development kit equipped with the 5G mmWave phased array antenna module, PAAM "FutureAccessTM" - Avnet and Rohde & Schwarz exhibit at the US International Symposium on Communications -

May 25, 2023
Fujikura Ltd.

Fujikura Ltd. (Director, President and CEO: Okada Naoki), in collaboration with Avnet, Inc. (CEO: Phil Gallagher), has begun sales a 5G millimeter wave communications system development kit equipped with the FutureAccess TM 28 GHz phased array antenna module (PAAM) for the millimeter wave frequency band, and will exhibit the kit at the communications-related International Microwave Symposium 2023 *1 (IEEE MTT-S International Microwave Symposium 2023: IMS2023) to be held in the United States.

【point】
・ sales of development kits for 5G millimeter wave communications systems begin

・ Exhibiting at the international symposium IMS2023 to be held in the United States in June

- Testing of the development kit will be carried out in a live demonstration

<In collaboration with Avnet, we have launched a development kit equipped with PAAM "FutureAccess TM ">.>
The kit's strong point / feature is that it combines the PAAM developed by Fujitsu with the third-generation adaptive radio platform (Zynq™ RFSoC *2 Gen3) from AMD (Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.), a U.S. semiconductor manufacturing, and will help speed up the prototype development of advanced 5G millimeter wave communications systems.
Our PAAM operates in the mmWave frequency bands n257 (28GHz), n258 (26GHz), and n261 (27GHz) specified in the 5G standard and can be used both indoors and outdoors.
The high level of integration of 8x8 antenna elements, RF integrated circuits and filters enables the rapid design of compact 5G mmWave communication systems. High power efficiency and extremely fast beam switching (<220ns) give Fujikura's PAAM-based systems industry-leading performance.
Additionally, the calibration-free architecture and Fujikura's modularization technology give customers significant advantages in system integration, manufacturing and sales.
The entire development kit system is controlled using RFSoC Explorer® software, a MATLAB *3 application developed by Avnet that enables rapid implementation and testing of beamforming applications without the need for hardware description languages *4 or software coding.
All of this enables customers to reduce the development costs of 5G mmWave communication systems.

Avnet and Rohde & Schwarz exhibit at US Telecommunications International Symposium
The three companies, including our company, Avnet, and Rohde & Schwarz (President & CEO: Christian Leicher), a German-based manufacturer of high-performance high-frequency measuring instruments, are verifying the performance of the kit using the R& ATS800B benchtop CATR OTA test system *5 and will be presenting the results for the first time at IMS2023, which will be held in San Diego, USA in June.
The event will also feature live coverage of the tests being conducted in Germany, and you can see a demonstration using a 5G NR test signal. If you are in the area, please stop by Booth #2514.

R&S®ATS800B Benchtop CATR OTA Test System

Millimeter wave communication systems are attracting increasing attention, with telecommunications business around the world considering adopting them for 5G networks.
As ultra-high speed, low latency and large capacity communications are expected around the world, we are committed to developing equipment that will enable high-speed, large-capacity communications and contribute to the advancement of communications.

[Terminology explanation]

*1 International Microwave Symposium 2023
This international symposium brings together radio frequency and microwave engineers and researchers from around the world, and this year it will be held in San Diego, USA from June 11 to 16. It will consist of multiple technical conferences and a commercial exhibition.

*2 RFSoC
RF System on Chip is an AMD FPGA device with 8ch A/D and 8ch D/A and an Arm CPU core.

*3 MATLAB
The programming and computational platform used by millions of engineers and scientists to analyze data, develop algorithms, and build models.

*4 Hardware description language
An artificial language used to design circuits for semiconductor chips. It uses syntax and notation similar to programming languages to describe the configuration of elements included in a circuit, their operating conditions, and the wiring between elements.

*5 ATS800B Benchtop CATR OTA Test System
Highly compact far-field Over-The-Air (OTA) test system based on Compact Antenna Test Range (CATR) technology

*6 NR
New radio access technology established as international standard for 5G mobile networks
