December 20, 2022
Fujikura Ltd.
A paper with Fujikura employee of Fujikura Ltd. (Director, President and CEO Okada Naoki) as the lead author won the Best Paper Award (APMC Prize) at the major international conference, the 2022 Asia-Pacific Microwave Conference (APMC 2022) *1.
The APMC Prize is awarded to the best paper presented at the conference, and this paper was written by eight people, with Chihiro Kamitaki of our Electronic Application Technology R&D Center as lead author. The paper was highly praised for its description of the power amplifiers used in millimeter wave base stations for the fifth generation mobile communication system, or 5G, which our company is currently developing.
- Achieves high output power while minimizing distortion of millimeter wave band signals and increasing power consumption.
・Highly praised for its configuration that enables miniaturization of millimeter wave ICs used in 5G base stations.

Title: A 24-30 GHz Power Amplifier with >20 dBm Psat and <0.1 dB AM-AM Distortion for 5G Applications
Authors: Chihiro Kamidaki, Yuma Okuyama and Tatsuo Kubo (Fujikura Ltd., Japan); Wooram Lee, Caglar Ozdag and Bodhisatwa Sadhu (IBM, USA); Yo Yamaguchi and Ning Guan (Fujikura Ltd., Japan)
We have licensed high-frequency IC technology from IBM in the United States and developed the 28 GHz millimeter-wave phased array antenna module (PAAM) "FutureAccess™" *2 for 5G base stations. Samples have been available since April this year. By revising some of the electrical circuits used in this sample, we have achieved high output while reducing distortion of high-frequency signals and suppressing increases in power consumption, and have also achieved miniaturization by integrating the design with multiple circuits such as transmit/receive switches and low-noise amplifiers.
Telecommunications business around the world are moving forward with adopting mmWave for their 5G networks.
We will continue to work on development towards commercialization in order to realize even higher speed and larger capacity communications.
- ※ 1 APMC 2022
This is an international conference held annually by the society to promote the development of innovative millimeter wave and microwave devices and related technologies in the Asia-Pacific region, and is one of the world's leading conferences along with the IEEE International Microwave Symposium (IMS) in the United States and the European Microwave Week (EuMW) in Europe. This year, it will be held in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture from November 29th to December 2nd.
- * 2 Phased Array Antenna Module (PAAM) "FutureAccess™"
We began development of this product in 2019 after receiving a license for high-frequency IC technology from IBM in the United States, and it transmits radio waves with high efficiency and low power consumption. It provides a high-quality communication environment without dead spots while achieving smaller and lower-cost base stations. Evaluation samples have been available since April of this year.
