Sony to Present Innovative Performance of Phased Array Antenna Module for 28GHz 5G Millimeter Wave Infrastructure at ISSCC 2022, the Semiconductor Industry's Largest International Conference
February 17, 2022
Fujikura Ltd.
Fujikura Ltd. (Director, President and CEO Masahiko Ito) will announce the results of its joint development with International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) of the United States at the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) to be held on February 24, 2022.
This presentation will mainly report on two innovative features of the Phased Array Antenna Module (PAAM) for 28 GHz 5G mmWave infrastructure.
Two innovative features of the PAAM for 28GHz 5G mmWave
1) On-chip calculation mode enables 100 times more beam control
Conventional PAAMs have a built-in beam table and can generate beams only in the directions specified by the table, but the beam table usually only supports a few hundred beams.
The PAAM we developed uses an IC that can quickly calculate and generate more than 30,000 beams, enabling area coverage that is more than 100 times finer than the beam table method.
2) Low power consumption
By optimizing the internal design of the IC, PAAM has achieved a high power-added efficiency of up to 20%, realizing the lowest possible power consumption, making it easy to solve the thermal issues that are a challenge when designing mobile base stations.
ISSCC is known as the most prestigious international conference on semiconductor circuit technology. The PAAM we developed was selected as the presentation topic this time because its excellent functions and performance have been widely recognized within the industry.
The demonstration at the conference on February 23rd will also include a demonstration of PAAM in action, so be sure to tune in.
This year (2022), ISSCC will be held as a virtual conference, following last year's COVID-19 global pandemic. IBM and Fujikura's presentations are scheduled to take place in Session 27.3.
