Fujikura Group CSR Report 2012
[ISO 26000 Core Subject] The Environment

Environmentally Friendly Products

We have two special committees under our Environment-Side Working Group, one which focuses on expanding environmentally friendly products, and the other on managing chemical substances used in products.

Expanding Environmentally Friendly Products

Green Mind Products

We carry out environmental impact assessment on our products at the stages of planning, development, and design. The environmental impact of products is estimated over their whole lifecycle (from the procurement of materials, through manufacture, use to disposal) to improve their environmental performance. Moreover, the green product management committee examines the product assessment check sheets submitted by the business departments and registers products that meet the predefined criteria as "Green Mind Products." In fiscal 2011, 82 products were registered as Green Mind Products.

Green products

Under our Green Product certification system, which we have established to foster the development of more environmentally compatible products, we certify products that are even more environmentally friendly than Green Mind Products as Green Products. We label Green Products with the Green Project mark and approve the use of this mark according to the rules for ISO 14021 Type II environmental labeling.

Management of Chemical Substances Used in Products

In the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation made at the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) held in Johannesburg in 2002, it was decided that the parties would endeavor to achieve a goal of making chemicals "used and produced in ways that lead to the minimization of significant effects on human health and the environment by 2020," and subsequently in 2006, the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) was formulated. Regulations have also been enhanced around the world towards achieving the goal agreed at the WSSD, including enforcement of the REACH regulation in the EU and revision of the Act on the Evaluation of Chemical Substances and Regulation of Their Manufacture, etc. in Japan. In response to these international trends and enhancement of regulations, Fujikura is strengthening the management of chemicals based on its own green policy.
To this end, we are identifying the chemicals used in our products and implementing measures to reduce or discontinue the use of substances of high concern in our products.

We also regard the disclosure and communication of information on chemicals across our supply chain as a priority issue and are improving the infrastructure for better information communication.
Specifically, we are establishing an information communication system in cooperation with suppliers and customers using JGPSSI, JAMP AIS, JAMP MSDSplus, and JAMA, which are survey forms standardized by the industry associations.

The Fujikura Group's policy on managing chemical substances used in products ("Green Policy")

In line with the CSR Philosophy of the Fujikura Group, we will appropriately manage chemical substances and ensure the nonuse of prohibited chemicals, thereby providing customers with products that they can use safely. By reducing the use of SOCs, we will help to build a sustainable society.
