Development of "Ultra Low Attenuation Optical Fiber", the Symbol of Fujikuraism

Phase.4 The Leader of Development

Optical fiber cables manufactured using the Fujikura system were adopted on a full- scale basis also for the single-mode following the multi-mode. The Company naturally played a leading role in the practical application plan.

In response to Fujikura's various industry-leading research & development, the optical fiber practical application plan by Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation at last got under way. Starting with the first in-house general experiment at Yokosuka Communication Laboratory in October 1976, the first on-site test of the GI-type optical fiber cable for middle-range use was conducted in Tokyo in March 1978. Initially, each company proposed their own respective fiber structures and cable structures. However, they were unified to the Fujikura types in July 1979, since tests demonstrated that every proposal by Fujikura brought favorable results. The second on-site test in January 1980 was conducted to verify the functionality of the Fujikura-type cables manufactured by each company. After a commercial test as the final stage in December 1980, the GI-type optical fiber cables based on the Fujikura system (multi-mode, intermediate capacity transmission system) was officially adopted in November 1982.

Meanwhile, on-site testing of SM (single-mode)-type optical fibers for long range and large capacity transmission was conducted in October 1980 following the GI-type. In the case of the SM type, especially advanced skill is required for splicing. Thus, Fujikura continued development regarding the axis matching of the core section and completed a pilot model of the fusion splicer. It continued improvement thereafter prevailing over others in every area, including the development of self-aligning fusion splicers and core alignment fusion splicers. Fujikura won the No.1 share in the world market. The Company then went on to play a leading role also in the longitudinal optical fiber cable network project in Japan in the INS (Information Network System) that started in 1985.
