A fiber grating (FBG) is a fiber base device which has a structure of periodic modulation of refractive index in the core section of an optical fiber. The refractive index modulation is made by exposing ultraviolet rays to the core (Ge doped silica glass) section of the optical fiber.
When inputting light to the FBG, only light with wavelengths that match the periodic change of the refractive index will be reflected. This property enables optical fiber to filter specific wavelength. Fujikura has been developing and making commercially available fiber gratings in the past, placing a central focus on applications for optical communication systems. In addition, we perform application research on FBGs so they may be applied to other fields such as the sensing applications.
