Start of Operation of Fault Locator with the Most Advanced Rader Technology at the Hokkaido-Honshu Electric Power Interconnection Facility

February 20, 2015

Further to our previous release on September 5, 2013, Electric Power Development Co., Ltd. (Masayoshi Kitamura, President, hereinafter referred to as "J-Power") and Fujikura Ltd. (Yoichi Nagahama, President & CEO, hereinafter referred to as "the Company") announces that "the fault locator with the most advanced radar technology for power transmission lines applying FMCW radar system*1 (hereinafter referred to as "New Fault Locator"*2)" started its operation at the Hokkaido-Honshu Electric Power Interconnection Facility -direct current overhead lines- today. J-Power and the Company has developed this innovative product that was put into use for extra high voltage power transmission lines for the first time.

Fault locators for power transmission lines are installed in extra high voltage transmission lines, the important parts for electric power supply, to find faults caused by lightning etc. There are several types of fault locators for power transmission lines in use, and one of them is "with pulse-radar system.*3" New Fault Locator has been developed and put into use as its successor model.

New Fault Locator is smaller and more energy-saving than conventional ones owing to applying "FMCW radar system", one of the most advanced radar technologies. In addition to improving performance of locating faults, it has functions to report fault locations to maintenance staff by e-mail, to sensor changes power transmission lines conditions by continuous automatic fault locating etc.

J-Power will introduce New Fault Locators for replacement of aging devices from now on. The Company will expand them to both domestic and overseas power utility companies etc.*4 It will keep promoting New Fault Locator, since it can be applied not only to overhead transmission lines but also to various metal cable networks for power transmission and telecommunication.

*1 FMCW radar system
FMCW (Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave) radar system. The system to change frequency of signals periodically and transmit the signals continuously. The system locates fault by measuring frequency difference between transmitting signals and receiving signals from fault points.
*2 The newly developed fault locator for power transmission lines with FMCW radar system is patent-pending.
*3 Pulse radar system
In the event that troubles occur due to lightening etc., the fault locator locates fault by receiving reflective signals after sending high voltage high-frequency pulse signals. J-Power uses it when other systems cannot be applied for power transmission lines and others.
*4 The Company will produce and sell New Fault Locator.
