CO2 Emissions Reduction (Climate change measures)

Policy and Guideline

The Fujikura Group formulated the 2025 Environmental Management Activity Guidelines. The guidelines set “achieving 45% renewable energy as a percentage of total energy in FY2030” as a CO2 reduction target aimed at the RE100 target and also made this a shared goal for overseas locations.
FY2018 was re-established as the base year for calculating reduction in total CO2 emissions, as we set the goal of reducing total CO2 emissions in FY2025 by at least 332,000 tons/year (at least a 20% reduction compared to FY2018).

Concept of the Base Year and Intensity Levels of CO2 Emissions

  • Fujikura Group CO2 emissions are calculated by multiplying the energy used in each fiscal year for each type of energy by the CO2 emissions factor for each type of energy.
  • Fujikura has complied with the use of market standard emissions factors indicated in the GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance since FY2018.
  • Base year, Japan and overseas: FY2018
  • Conversion factor
    - Electric power in Japan: Adjusted emissions factors for electric power providers in the most recent year, published by the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry
    - Overseas electric power: Emissions factors by country, published by IEA
    - Fuel in Japan and overseas: Emissions factors for the most recent fiscal year published by the Ministry of the Environment

Total GHG Emissions and Energy Usage

Total GHG emissions in FY2020 amounted to 373,000 tons, all of which were CO2 emissions. Emissions in Japan totaled 125,000 tons, while overseas emissions totaled 248,000 tons. Electricity accounted for 93% of energy used and fuel for 7%.

Calculating Emissions in the Supply Chain (Scope 1, 2 and 3)

Following the establishment of Scope 3 criteria in 2011, the GHG Protocol* requires companies disclose information on CO2 emissions not only for our own business activities but also for the entire supply chain. Fujikura continued to perform a simple calculation for all Scope 3 categories of the GHG Protocol in fiscal 2020. The calculation results for Scope 1, 2 and 3 from FY2016 to FY2020 are as follows.

  • *The Greenhouse Gas Protocol: A set of calculation standards for greenhouse gases created mainly by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and the World Resources Institute (WRI).

Activity Results for FY 2020

Up to FY2020, the medium-term targets for reducing emissions were a 3% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to FY2013 in Japan and a reduction in annual emissions intensity(per net sales) of at least 1.3% compared to FY2014 overseas. The activities conducted based on these targets resulted in a 25.6% reduction in CO2 emissions in compared to FY2013 in Japan and an 11.4% improvement in emissions intensity compared to FY2014 overseas (equivalent to 1.9% per year).

The Fujikura Group also began preparing to enroll in the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), in addition to joining the RE100. The Fujikura Group 2025 Environmental Management Activity Guidelines (“2025 Environmental Guidelines”) were formulated based on the initiatives mentioned above. These guidelines include pursuing energy savings by improving production efficiency in addition to CO2 emissions reduction targets. Regarding energy savings in particular, the Energy Conservation Promotion Team has formulated a plan for achieving a 10% improvement in the intensity of energy used in production in FY2025, compared to FY2020. This plan target was set based on the roadmap for achieving the "2050 Zero Challenge" to achieve net zero CO2 emissions. The team is monitoring progress on a regular basis.

More specifically, we actively engaged in energy conservation activities that do not require investment and achieved energy savings equivalent to roughly 300 million yen company-wide. The entire company worked in “holiday mode” at night, on holidays, and during other non-operating hours by minimizing standby electricity used for air conditioning, compressed air, cooled water, etc. We also used a ThermoViewer to maintain temperature and eliminate heat loss in areas where it was occurring. An air leak detector and other equipment were used to identify and correct leaks of plant air and steam. Additional measures included returning to the basics and revising air conditioning temperature settings, prohibiting changing of the settings, and making sure that lights were turned off and PCs powered down when people left the office.

Activities in Transportation and Logistics

Our target was to maintain energy intensity associated with logistics activities in FY2020 at the level achieved in FY2019. We actually achieved 41.2 kL/kt in FY2020, compared to FY2019 results of 38.3 kL/kt. This failure to achieve the target reflected comparison to FY2019 results, which were higher than seen in recent years, as well as the decline in loading rates caused by lower shipments from main consignees due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is worth noting that we are maintaining the trend of decline when compared to FY2018 results (41.5 KL/kt).

Energy Conservation Initiatives

Promotion of Ministry of the Environment Campaigns

As a group of companies that is mindful of the environment, the Fujikura Group participates in the COOL CHOICE campaign for preventing global warming ahead of 2030 being implemented by Japan’s Ministry of the Environment. We are implementing active initiatives under this campaign. In addition, we also participate in the energy conservation and Cool Biz campaigns in the summer and Warm Biz campaign in the winter.

Eco-tuning

The Real Estate Company has embarked on a plan to reduce wasted electricity use and CO2 emissions through eco-tuning and return the cost savings to tenants and building owners.

The eco-tuning touted by the Ministry of the Environment is a method of detailed analysis and diagnosis of the conditions of use for existing equipment and systems and pursuing energy conservation efficiently without sacrificing comfort and productivity.

We maximized use of the BEMS system introduced in FY2020 to improve refrigerator/freezer operating efficiency.

Energy Conservation Initiatives at Business Sites

At the Sakura Works, energy savings were achieved by upgrading compressors and wastewater treatment equipment and efficient operation.

Suzuka Works improved productivity and achieved energy savings by improving the good quality rate for optical fibers and increasing linear velocity.

The Real Estate Company is working in cooperation with tenants to achieve energy savings by switching to LED lighting in tenant offices and equipping BEMS with more sophisticated functions.

Energy Conservation Initiatives at Group Companies

We are working to switch to LED lighting at manufacturing sites in Thailand and introduce inverter air conditioning equipment.
Company-wide energy conservation activities at each site include implementing holiday mode for power equipment and taking steps to eliminate energy loss through air leaks, etc.
