Community Involvement and Development Local Community and Social Contribution Activities The Fujikura Group's Concept of Social Contribution Activities The Fujikura Group's concept of social contribution activities is based on the Fujikura Group Corporate Philosophy MVCV (Mission, Vision, Core Values), which is to help customers create value and contribute to society through its "Tsunagu" technologies, as well as based on a statement in our CSR Basic Principles, which says, "each and every employees will become aware of his or her own role as a member of society, and act according to good social sense." We are carrying out social contribution activities in accordance with our CSR Basic Principles, setting forth the concept that "we make social contribution actively, respecting the cultures and customs of the various countries and regions we operate in." Our social contribution activities began in 1919 when Harukichi Nakauchi, a former auditor of the Company, established an institution for the mentally disabled, Fujikura Gakuen, with his own funds. Since then, we, both as a company and as individuals, have supported the institution. In the same regard, as times change, we as a company have considered how we should become involved with society and have taken actions accordingly up until the present day. We have contributed to society for over 90 years since Fujikura Gakuen's founding. Recognizing that our support for Fujikura Gakuen is the starting point of our Group's social contribution activities, we are committed to continuing our support of the institution. In fiscal 2016 the Fujikura Group participated in a total of about 350 social contribution activities. Formulation of the Fujikura Group's Basic Policy on Social Contribution The Fujikura CSR Committee established the "Fujikura Group Basic Social Responsibility Principles" to enable easier, active promotion of social contributions by employees in conjunction with local communities. [Major Activity Areas] (1) Activities to help people (2) Activities to support the growth of youth as next-generation leaders (3) Activities to foster harmonization with local communities (4) Activities to promote research and learning (5) Activities to protect the environment History of Fujikura's Social Contribution Since the beginning of the construction of a plant in Kiba, Tokyo in 1919, Fujikura has conducted its business operations in harmony with local communities for more than 90 years, and in November 2010, concurrently with the completion of the project to redevelop the former site of the Fukagawa Plant, we opened the Fujikura-Kiba Millennium Woods as a space suitable for the waterfront Kiba district. We created this biotope/garden as part of our efforts to conserve biodiversity and enhance our ties with local communities. The history of Fujikura dates back to 1885. Over the long years since then, including the period when the business foundation was established, employees of Fujikura have been committed to serving customers in a sincere manner and doing business in harmony with society as part of their corporate culture. Even now, amid the globalization of the Fujikura Group's business, we have retained this corporate culture and are committed to keeping harmony with local people and contributing to local communities in each country and region we operate in. In the following, we will introduce how the Fujikura Group has conducted social contribution activities for more than 130 years, including social contributions made by our predecessors as individuals, such as the establishment of Fujikura Gakuen. Year Contribution 1916 Kenzo Okada (former managing director) began providing financial support to education as an individual benefactor. 1919 Harukichi Nakauchi (younger brother of the founder and former auditor) established Fujikura Gakuen in Oshima. 1929 Tomekichi Matsumoto (the first president) donated a building for the new clinic opened by St. Barbana Mission at Kusatsu for people suffering Hansen's disease. 1935 Tomekichi Matsumoto (the first president) donated all 530 volumes of Gunsho Ruijyu written by Hokiichi Hanawa for the launch of Ninomiya Bunko (present Tochigi Prefectural Library). 1936 Tomekichi Matsumoto (the first president) made a monetary donation to RIKEN to support its research activities. 1938 Tomekichi Matsumoto (the first president) donated a meteorological station to Izu Oshima. 1939 Tomekichi Matsumoto and Fujikura Group companies established the research foundation named "Fujikura Kenkyusho" (present Fujikura Foundation) to conduct and support R&D. 1965 Restarted the education support activity launched before the Second World War via Fujikura Ikueikai. 2010 Established the Fujikura-Kiba Millennium Woods for local communities and biodiversity conservation Key Activities Fujikura Gakuen, the Starting Point for Our Social Contribution Activities Harukichi Nakauchi, Founder of Fujikura Gakuen Fujikura Gakuen was founded on June 7, 1919 by Harukichi Nakauchi, younger brother of the founder of Fujikura and former auditor of the Company. He donated 230,000 yen (equivalent to about two billion yen today) from his own funds to construct this school for the mentally disabled on land extending over about 132,000 m2 in Izu Oshima. He also donated this land and the facilities necessary for the foundation of the school. Currently, there are facilities in Izu Oshima and Tama (Hachioji city), about 100 staff members are doing education and welfare on a 24-hour system for about 130 students. Since its founding, the presidents and executive officers have supported the management as directors, and donations from employees have been continued to date as well as company donations. We hope to continue to support "Fujikura Gakuen" as the origin of social contribution activities in the future. In fiscal 2016, we held new employees' day volunteers and souvenirs of Fujikura Gakuen products. Oshima Fujikura Gakuen Fujikura Gakuen (Social Welfare Corporation) Establishment: June 7, 1919 President: Kazuhiko Ohashi Welfare services: Provided through Oshima Fujikura Gakuen and Tama Fujikura Gakuen Number of people receiving: About 130 in total Sale of Fujikura Gakuen Goods In June and December, which are designated as the campaign months to increase the number of participants in the Fujikura Gakuen Support Group, we have been holding fairs to sell Fujikura Gakuen goods. In the fairs held in the 6th year of the activity, we sold madeleine cakes, cookies, pound cakes and other sweets made at Fuji Cafe in Izu Oshima, which is a facility operated by Fujikura Gakuen to support the independence of students with disabilities. We also collected donations to Fujikura Gakuen at the fairs. Volunteer Activities for a Day at Fujikura Gakuen All newly hired employees conducted volunteer activities for a day at Fujikura Gakuen. Through this experience, they learned the excellent traditions that our predecessors have maintained for 100 years. Installing Vending Machines to Give Support to Fujikura Gakuen As a means to support Fujikura Gakuen, Fujikura Ltd. installed special vending machines at its head office and other sites. Fujikura Gakuen is a facility for people with mental disabilities and is a starting point of the Fujikura Group's social contribution activities. It is indicated on each of the vending machines in large letters that the Fujikura Group supports Fujikura Gakuen, and as printed also on each machine with an illustration, part of sales from the machines is donated to Fujikura Gakuen. Employees can thus make a donation to the facility by buying a drink from the machines, which were made and installed thanks to cooperation from POKKA SAPPORO Food & Beverage Ltd., a Sapporo Group company. Support to the Fujikura Foundation The Fujikura Group supports the activities of the Fujikura Foundation, which gives financial assistance to researchers in the field of science and technology. This public interest incorporated association was initially launched as a research foundation (Fujikura Kenkyusho) by the second president Arata Matsumoto, being funded by the first president Tomekichi Matsumoto (100,000 yen) and by Fujikura Insulated Wire &Cable Ltd. (present Fujikura Ltd.) and Fujikura Kogyo (present Fujikura Rubber Ltd. and Fujikura Kasei Co., Ltd.) (1.1 million yen in total). The research foundation was opened in Yono City, Saitama Prefecture and then relocated to Sendagaya and then to Samezu. At the facility, research was conducted focusing on polymers. Subsequently the name of the foundation was changed to "Shinsei Shigen Kyokai" in 1946 and the main activity of the foundation was changed to give financial assistance to researchers and engineers. Since then Fujikura has been contributing to society by supporting the activities of this foundation. The foundation became a public interest incorporated association on April 1, 2011 and changed its name from Shinsei Shigen Kyokai to the Fujikura Foundation on November 1, 2012. Awarding Scholarships to Myanmar Universities The Fujikura group began the "Fujikura Scholarship System" out of a desire to support Myanmar's next generation of scientists and engineers. Fujikura awarded 4 Myanmar science and engineering universities with scholarships, and donated each university the past 10 years of the "Fujikura Technical Journal" as a means of disseminating the latest technical information. After establishing the Myanmar office in 2013, the Fujikura group joined with Barons Machinery & Engineering Co., Ltd., to form the joint concern Barons & Fujikura EPC Co., Ltd. (BFE) to contribute to the development of Myanmar's electrical and telecommunication infrastructure. Since then, BFE's main work has been the installation and maintenance of electrical transmission, transforming, and distribution networks and telecommunications networks. However, in FY2015 Fujikura also contributes to Myanmar's nation building by implementing training for advanced distribution networks to ensure engineer safety during line construction. We plan to continue awarding scholarships and distributing Fujikura Technical Journals in the future. Sending Smiles to Children of Developing Countries with the Employee Cafeteria's Healthy Lunches Our company began selling TFT healthy lunches at our main office cafeteria in January of 2014. TFT is short for "Table For Two", and is a philanthropic effort of the Table For Two International NPO. Table For Two works wipe out starvation and malnutrition in developing countries at the same time as obesity and lifestyle diseases in developed countries. When Fujikura employees purchase TFT healthy lunches, Fujikura donates 20 yen from each meal to school lunches for children of developing countries, the cost of one school lunch in those nations. It is a system that presents children of developing countries with one lunch for each meal eaten by a Fujikura employee. We send smiles to children of developing countries with our international philanthropic activities, and receive health in return. This makes for an exchange of the gifts of happiness and health. Support for Areas Afflicted by the Great East Japan Earthquake March 11, 2017 marked the passage of six years since the Great East Japan Earthquake. We still keep the memory of the disaster alive deep in our thoughts and are strongly committed to communicating what we experienced at that time to younger generations. Areas afflicted by the disaster have gradually been recovering from the damage, but still face a range of problems. We will continue to help people in Tohoku overcome the difficulties they face. Fukushima Reconstruction Support Activities -Volunteer Activities Supporting Disaster-Stricken Areas in Minamisoma Continuing from last year, the Fujikura group held volunteer activities supporting disaster recovery in Minamisoma, Fukushima Prefecture. For two days over October 14th and 15th of 2016, 11 employees participated at the Minamisoma Volunteer Activity Center in the Odaka ward of Minamisoma city. Participants trimmed grass and tended gardens at abandoned houses, and delivered furniture and cleaned temporary houses. -Campaign to Increase the Number of Tourists to Fukushima Fukushima Prefecture is implementing a campaign for the recovery of local tourism. Wishing to support this campaign and help the prefecture break free of harmful rumors, the Fujikura Group also started a campaign to encourage employees to visit Fukushima. In this campaign, the Group introduces its employees to the seasonal beauty and wonderful features of Fukushima. We sincerely hope that people living in afflicted areas in Tohoku will restore and enrich their lives, for which we will continue to provide support. -Opening of the "Fukushima Recovery Exhibition and Sale" at the Sakura Plant We held the "Fukushima Recovery Exhibition and Sale" at the Sakura plant. The event consisted of the sale of goods from the "Fukushima Hall" in Nihonbashi (Tokyo) at the Sakura plant, and was held for its second year. -Implementation of the Fukushima Bus Tour at the Ishioka Plant Fujikura holds bus tours of the Ishioka plant's industrial park. Fujikura was in charge this year, so the destination of this year's bus tour was Iwaki city in Fukushima prefecture. We ran the event after sharing the Fujikura group's "Let's Go to Fukushima!" campaign with everyone in the Industrial Park. Kumamoto Disaster Area Assistance -Domestic Fujikura Group Companies' Assistance Efforts At Fujikura Line Tech Western Japan in Kumamoto, parts of buildings were damaged due to the Kumamoto earthquake, and some machinery was toppled. As a result, the Fujikura group gave assistance such as donations. Also, many employees of Fujikura Line Tech Western Japan's homes were damaged, and Fujikura Company, Western Japan Wire (Osaka) donated 200 meals worth of food while volunteers helped clean the houses. -Chinese Group Company Assistance Activities 13 Chinese Fujikura group companies and their employees gathered a total of 61,555 yuan (roughly 1 million yen) in donations. FCH (Fujikura China), a Chinese managing company, sent those donations to the Japanese government via the Shanghai consulate. "Millennium Woods" and Local Communities The bio-garden "Fujikura Kiba Millennium Woods" arose out of the desire for more greenery held by local schoolchildren and residents. It was established next to our main office in Tokyo's Koto ward in November of 2010 as a natural environment for local communities. It the functions as both a biotope and a garden. A "Biotope Information Session" is held twice a year at the "Millennium Woods" as a way to foster communication with members of the local community. Fujikura is also building connections with the local community through environmental education activities for local elementary schools and preschools, like sweet-potato harvesting field trips for students of nearby preschools, and government-run Eco-tours. Support for Sports Activities Fujikura's Suzuka plant participates in the regional motorsports NPOs found for the encouragement and support of motor sports, and to support local community development. It also cooperates in the city marathon held by the Suzuka Motorsports Supporters Association. About Pro Bono Activities The Fujikura group holds volunteer "Pro Bono" activities using the expert knowledge and techniques employees gain in their work. Below is a list of those efforts. Activity Details Lecturer Hours Cooperation in the "Science and Engineering Challenge (abbreviation: Riko-Challe)" project to increase the interest of female high school and university students in science and engineering, and to educate the next generation of female technicians.
