Preparing for large disasters

Basic principles and policies

The Fujikura Group established its business continuity policies in March 2012, and also formulated the business continuity master plan as well as the plan to maintain a functioning headquarters for business continuity.

The Fujikura Group Business Continuity Policy

In line with the following principles, we will foster business continuity management (BCM) so that we can continue to fulfill our corporate social responsibility and supply our products and services in a stable manner even in the event of an emergency.

New international disaster control strategies adopted at the UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction

The Fujikura Group keeps the memory of the Great East Japan Earthquake alive by sending the President's message to employees every March 11, while reexamining its disaster control and reduction measures for large earthquakes and raising employees' disaster awareness on a continual basis.

As part of the activities to prepare for large-scale disasters, the Fujikura Group CSR Committee participated in the United Nations Third World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction held in Sendai from March 14 to 18. Through the conference, the Committee reexamined risks posed to Group companies in each country and region, and identified the present situation with regard to the disaster-afflicted Tohoku region.

■The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and the Fujikura Group's roles

The Fujikura Group CSR Committee identified the roles to be played by the Group in reference to the details and items concerning the Sendai Framework, which states the new international disaster control action guidelines for 2030.

[Roles to be played by companies]

We will further enhance our disaster control and reduction measures based on the Sendai Framework and in collaboration with the United Nations, the national government, and other related organizations.

Emergency drill for the Group emergency response headquarters

At the head office of Fujikura Ltd., a simulation drill was conducted with the participation of all members of the Management Committee on september 24, 2015.
A porpose of this simulation drills is to extract challenges and consider their solutions in case of inland large earthquakes in the Tokyo metroporitan area.
Based on this assumption, the Fujikura Group's emergency response headquarters was established to deal with the issues of life saving and business continuity and to improve the Group's abilities to respond to emergencies and contingencies. At the end of this drill, an expert evaluated the results of the simulation and participants checked the improvements to be made to improve business continuity plans (BCPs).

Disaster control drill held at the head office of Fujikura Ltd.

On September 12, we held a disaster control drill for the emergency response headquarters of Fujikura Ltd. based on a fictional scenario in which the head office suffered damage due to an earthquake that hit the northern part of Tokyo Bay. We also conducted training on the safety confirmation system targeting all employees as a regular drill conducted twice a year.

On October 9, we held an evacuation drill and first aid training with the participation of all employees working in the head office district, including employees of all departments and those of affiliated companies.

Seminar on the use of a wheelchair for evacuation down stairs

It is predicted that mega-quakes will occur in the near future, such as the Nankai Trough earthquakes and inland earthquakes in the Tokyo metropolitan area. In the event of a large earthquake, elevators will be urgently stopped and become unusable. In such an event, it will be necessary to help people with physical disabilities, those who have difficulty in walking and the injured evacuate down stairs from the higher floors of a building to outside.
On October 15, 2014, the head office held a seminar on the use of a wheelchair for evacuation down stairs as part of the disaster control drill, so that employees will be able to help people with physical disabilities and those who are unable to walk independently evacuate down stairs safely to outside. Employees representing each office floor participated in the seminar and were briefed on the use, and then took turns to actually practice how to use a wheelchair for evacuation down stairs.

Safety confirmation system and the "disaster control card" to be always carried by employees

Based on the idea that individual employees are important assets for the Fujikura Group, we are implementing a range of disaster control measures against large Nankai Trough earthquakes as well as inland earthquakes in the metropolitan area, all of which are predicted to occur in the near future. The disaster control measures include the distribution of "disaster control cards," which employees are always expected to carry, and the operation of the safety confirmation system.

■Safety confirmation system

The Fujikura Group has been implementing its safety confirmation system since 2010 in order to confirm the safety of employees and their families in the event of a disaster as its first priority responsibility. Under the system, attempts to contact employees will repeatedly be made until the safety of all employees is confirmed, with all employees obliged to respond to the system. All results of the system operation are reported to the top executives.

■"Disaster control card" to always be carried by employees

The Fujikura Group distributes disaster control cards to employees, who are obliged to carry them at all times. To help employees protect themselves in the event of a disaster, the card contains information on items that are essential for the protection of their lives, such as actions to be taken in each region during a large earthquake, a checklist to prepare for disasters, and responses to be made with regard to the safety confirmation system.

Disaster control activities conducted by the entire Group

According to the United Nations, as many as 700,000 people died, 1.4 million were injured, and 23 million lost their homes as a result of earthquakes, floods, flood tides, and other disasters during the past decade, with the economic damage totaling 1.3 trillion dollars (156 trillion yen). Disasters are worsening in scale due to global warming, and the number of people exposed to disaster risks is increasing. The Fujikura Group operates in 24 countries and regions around the world. Based on the recognition that the Group might experience a range of disasters in these areas, we are conducting disaster control and reduction activities.

■Number of participants in disaster prevention activities in Fiscal 2014

Number of companies Number of Employees
Fujikura and Group Companies in Japan 21 19,030
Overseas Group Companies 25 76,977
Total 46 96,007

Employees therefore practiced how to evacuate, discharge water, deal with smoke, give first aid to and transport victims, and use a fire extinguisher in the drill.
They also had a virtual experience of an earthquake with the seismic intensity of 7 in the simulator vehicle.

Helping employees promote their health

Employee health and disease prevention were first identified as an important issue for the Fujikura Group in 2010. Specifically in formulating the 2015 Mid-term Business Plan, we decided to foster measures for employee health based on the idea that "good employee health is the basis for corporate competitiveness" and as a result of discussing the significance of employee health for the Group to remain to be a corporate entity needed by society 10 and 20 years after. Then in the next year, or in 2011, we established a new in-house group named "Health Care Solution Group" and launched the 2015 Mid-Term Business Plan toward the future.

We searched for an effective health promotion program for employees, but there were no companies that could offer such a program to us. We therefore decided to develop a new health promotion program independently, which would help individual employees manage their health data and conduct health promotion activities in an effective manner by the use of information technologies. We also distributed pedometers to individual employees so that they could monitor their health on a daily basis. In addition, we installed body composition monitors and manometers at our sites for employees to easily check their health at their workplaces. In fiscal 2014, we expanded the target of these measures to include employees of Group companies in addition to those of Fujikura Ltd.

Policies and targets

There are two underlying policies to promote the health management of the Fujikura Group.
One is shown on the "Criteria for the management of employees' health and safety and for ethical considerations". "6.Promotion of a safe, hygienic work environment and health management" is written in the Section Six.
The other is the "Fujikura Group Basic Principles for Safety and Health". Is in Section Four, there is a phrase "4.We will foster our health both mentally and physically and endeavor to manage our health in an autonomous manner".

Criteria for the management of employees' health and safety and for ethical considerations

Fujikura Group Basic Principles for Safety and Health

Safety is the basis of all our business operations. The Fujikura Group's management and all its employees will conduct business operations giving first priority to safety and legal compliance, thereby creating safe and comfortable workplaces and fostering their own mental and physical health.

Specific activities

As stated in the Fujikura Group Health Management Declaration announced in December 2013, the Fujikura Group supports individual employees in taking care of their own health while also promoting organizational healthcare activities based on the belief that employee health is one of its most important management resources. By conducting these employee health promotion activities, the Group aims to become a corporate group that is appreciated by customers, highly evaluated by society and whose employees work in vigor.

Self-Management of Health According to Risk Categories

In the Group's health promotion and disease prevention activities, employees are classified according to their health risks and provided with programs made for their risk categories. This helps employees recognize what health situations they are in and allows them to choose the programs suitable for their own situations. Specifically, based on the regular health checkup results, employees who show symptoms of preventable diseases are identified and asked whether they have already received treatment at medical facilities or not. All the information thus obtained is analyzed, and individual employees are classified into "high risk," "medium risk," "low risk" and "healthy" categories according to the urgency and gravity of any complaints, and are subdivided into groups by disease within each category. Then the Group decides on the measures to support employees' health according to their risk categories and groups, in consideration of the cost effectiveness of the disease prevention measures to be implemented for each category and group.

Fujikura Group Health Management Declaration

The Fujikura Group believes that employee health is one of our most important management resources. We support individuals in taking care of their own health, while we also promote organizational activities for healthcare as part of our goal to be a corporate group that is appreciated by customers, highly evaluated by society and whose employees work in vigor.

Firm-wide health promotion system

External evaluation and contribution

The Japanese government has been implementing its Japan Revitalization Strategy, which consists of the "three arrows" of "Abenomics." The government designates "Extend healthy life expectancy" on the top of the list of items for the "Strategic Market Creation Planning" in the "new growth strategy" ("third arrow"). Fujikura Ltd. is contributing to the government's activity to extend healthy life expectancy as explained below.

The measures implemented by Fujikura Ltd. to foster health and productivity management were highly evaluated for their sophistication and were featured in a news program broadcast by Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK). Moreover, the company's health and productivity management activities were widely introduced in The Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Mainichi, and other daily newspapers, and also in Nikkei Business, Nikkei Computer, Nikkei BP Online and other magazines and online articles. Also, Fujikura Ltd. is contributing to raising the awareness of health and productivity management among enterprise managers by presenting good examples to follow through articles that introduce its activities. These include an article published in a brochure created by the Commerce and Information Policy Bureau of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry to describe health and productivity management launches by advanced companies and an article in the fiscal 2015 handbook on labor-management spring negotiations and discussions published by KEIDANREN.
Further, the activities jointly conducted by the Fujikura Health Insurance Society and Fujikura Ltd. were regarded as a good example of the Data Health Plan activities, which had been launched by health insurance societies under the leadership of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare in accordance with the movement for health and productivity management. Moreover, the joint activities were introduced in the handbook on the Data Health business created by Hokenkagaku Sogo Kenkyukai (an NPO that studies health science) as well as in the magazine published by the National Federation of Health Insurance Societies, Business Labor Trend (magazine published by the Japan Institute for Labor Policy and Training), and in other publications. Through introduction of the joint activities via these media, the company also provided people engaged in Data Health operations, industrial health professionals, occupational safety and health facilitators, and others with relevant information.

Additionally, the health promotion program of Fujikura Ltd. was featured in the PR magazine of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (August-September issue of METI Journal).

Health promotion through an event to celebrate the company's 130th anniversary

Fujikura Ltd. celebrated the 130th anniversary of its founding in February, and held a commemorative walking event in which employees visited locations related to the 20-year business life of Zenpachi Fujikura, founder of the company (from Awaji-cho to the location of Bunka Gakuen University). The first round of the event was held on February 21, with 25 participants visiting five former plant sites, walking about 12 km in total. The employees were surprised at the fact that the former Shinjuku Plant was located within the Shinjuku Gyoen National Park and were impressed with the monument standing at the former site of the Sendagaya Plant. They felt the entrepreneurship of the founder on that day.

The second round of the walking event was held on April 4, and participating employees visited the moat area and the Shinjuku Gyoen National Park to enjoy watching cherry blossoms. The number of steps taken by each participant amounted to 20,000.

Various activities conducted by employees

The Fujikura Group's health promotion program allows all employees to view their own health data through "personal websites" and participate in various health promotion activities planned by the Group. The walking event in which all employees participate has been very successful, particularly since the start of the team competition in fiscal 2014, and became more and more popular as the number of the rounds increased, including the third round (in Hawaii) and the fourth round (in Shikoku). In the fourth round, the average number of steps taken by each participant increased to 9,000 per day, from 7,500 per day at the start of the event.

In Corporate Games Tokyo 2014, three teams from Fujikura Ltd. participated in the relay marathon, in which all team members took turns and ran over a total of 42 km. On the crisp fall day of the marathon, participants ran in a friendly manner, with Fujikura's Team A performing wonderfully to win the championship.

Participation in TABLE FOR TWO

TABLE FOR TWO (TFT) is a social contribution activity initiated in Japan by the NPO named TABLE FOR TWO International with a view to reducing the imbalance between developing countries facing the problems of starvation and malnutrition, and developed countries suffering the problems of obesity and lifestyle-related diseases. When employees buy a healthy lunch meal provided under the TFT program, 20 yen will be donated through the TFT secretariat to developing countries to provide local children with school lunches. It is said that a lunch can be offered to a school child at the cost of 20 yen, and so employees can donate a meal to a child every time they buy a meal for themselves under the program.Fujikura Ltd. began selling healthy TFT lunches at its head office cafeteria in January 2014 to support the TFT activity. This healthy lunch, a low-calorie meal composed of a variety of vegetables, is sold every Wednesday. It is well balanced in terms of nutrition and is indeed good for health. Employees can eat a healthy meal by choosing the TFT lunch, and by doing so can also donate to children in developing countries. Thus, the company is providing employees with opportunities to make social contributions easily and to also help children in developing countries while becoming healthy themselves.

Mental healthcare seminar

Fujikura Ltd. held a mental healthcare seminar on December 4, 2014, inviting an industrial counselor as a lecturer. In today's stressful society, it is important but very difficult for us to maintain both physical and mental health.Following the previous year's basic seminar on mental health, the company held a "self-care" seminar in fiscal 2014 on the theme of communication based on the knowledge of oneself and others, and a "line-care" seminar on the skills of asserting one's own opinions.
