Internal Environmental Audits

Fujikura has been voluntarily carrying out internal audits mainly at its manufacturing facilities to ensure compliance with environment-related national laws, local ordinances, and standards, thereby preventing environmental pollution and encouraging environment-related improvements at the facilities. We select sites to be audited at the beginning of each fiscal year, and an executive in charge of the environment along with members from the Human Resource & General Affairs Division, the Quality Assurance Division and the Board of Auditors visit them to perform the audits.

Environmental Impacts of Business Activities

The following shows the major environmental impacts of business activities conducted by Fujikura Ltd. and other domestic Group companies in fiscal 2013.

Environmental Impacts of Business Activities

Environmental Education

We provide all employees with environmental education to encourage them to conduct activities to conserve energy and resources through recycling and protect the global environment in their daily business operations. Specifically, we hold environmental seminars as part of the training for new employees, conduct OJT at our plants, provide ISO 14001 education for each department in our plants, and give special training for environment-related business operations on a regular basis, thereby increasing employees' environmental awareness.

Head office

Study meeting of in-house environmental auditors held at the head office

At the head office, we held a study meeting of in-house auditors in November 2013, which provided new in-house auditors with an educational opportunity. After being briefed on the responsibilities and roles to be played by in-house auditors to meet the ISO 14001-related requirements and given tips for practical training, participants actually practiced how to carry out in-house audits at the head office. We will continue to hold such meetings to help in-house auditors improve their skills.

Plants

Education of new employees at the Sakura Plant

At the Sakura Plant, new employees are provided with environmental education. In the education provided in April 2014, participants sorted waste into various categories at the waste storage place. Initially, they felt uneasy at the fact that the wastes were sorted into so many categories, but eventually understood that such sorting would foster recycling and help turn waste into valuables. In this hands-on seminar, they learned about the importance of waste sorting and the contributions that they could make to environmental conservation.

Provision of environmental education to Group employees at the Ishioka Plant

There are three Group companies located within the premises of the Ishioka Plant of Fujikura Ltd. Like an apartment owner and their tenants, the plant and Group companies need to share rules and manners to operate in the same location, and accordingly the plant provides new employees of the Group companies (including temporary workers and employees transferred from other locations) with necessary education upon requests from the companies. In education on the environment, the plant explains to the employees in particular about the handling of wastewater, because water discharged from the premises flow into Lake Kasumigaura. The plant is thereby raising Group employees' awareness about CSR.

Group company

DDK's education on chemical substances contained in products

DDK regularly provides employees with education on the requirements to be met for chemical substances contained in products, including those under the RoHS Directive in Europe, thereby raising employees' awareness and helping them acquire necessary knowledge. There are requirements to be met individually by the design and development department, testing and inspection department, and manufacturing department, so each of these departments provides necessary education in consideration of their operational needs. Employees gain a fresh recognition of the rules related to chemical substances contained in products through the regular education and conduct their daily operations with a strong commitment to never failing to meet the requirements.
