A rice cake-making festival at the "Akatsukiryo" children's nursing home

We began holding rice cake-making festivals at a children's nursing home last year and held the second one this year. A total of about 60 people including children participated in the festival. As soon as the head of the home announced the beginning of the event, the children, who were already familiar with this event, asked us to hold them in our arms or carry them on our shoulders, and of course we agreed. After the rice had been steamed, the children pounded the rice energetically with a pestle that was almost as heavy as they were. The pounded rice was made into rice cakes with different flavors. Children happily ate the rice cakes until all the dishes were empty. We were happy to see the children smiling this year, too.

Educating future candidates for the Nobel Prize

Oita Prefecture conducts a "Oita Super Science Consortium" to spread the measures implemented at Oita Maizuru High School, which is designated as a super science high school (SSH) by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, to other schools in the prefecture. The activity is intended to raise students' interest in science, technology, and mathematics and teach them the pleasures of studying science in a way that is difficult to adopt in ordinary school education, thus helping them develop their characters and abilities.

Our company participated in the activity under the slogan "Developing future candidates for the Nobel Prize in Oita," and provided local high school students with the opportunity to connect optical fibers in the summer of 2010. Participating students listened to the one-hour lecture very quietly without asking any questions, as is often the case with the children of today. But immediately after they actually began connecting optical fibers, their eyes glowed and they raised questions, implying that they like science.

We will continue providing the children who will form the next generation of leaders with educational opportunities.

Giving Christmas presents to trainees in a vocational training center

On Christmas Eve, President Umeda and some other members of the company visited a vocational training center named "Sakuranbo-no-Ie" to present packs of sweets to trainees.

In January 2008 we began collecting PET bottles and wasted cans from our workplaces and homes to make a contribution to local recycling activities, and the Christmas presents were bought using the proceedings from recycling waste and also money donated by the company.

Our company gave Christmas presents three times to trainees at the vocational training center, who were always pleased to receive presents.

We will continue the recycling activity and giving Christmas presents as our contribution to the local community and global environment and to retain the trust of local people.

Cleanup at Goshono New Town

Our company is located in Goshono New Town, where commercial, cultural and educational facilities, houses and parks, and various companies and distribution centers are also located.

Since fiscal 2000, companies in the area have been cooperating to conduct a cleanup of the area every April.

In the 11th cleanup held on April 15, 2011, 46 companies participated in cleaning up a vast area, which was divided into five sub areas. Forty five employees participated in the event from our company. It was still cold in Akita but participants carried out the cleanup energetically, battling against strong winds and wearing jumpers and gloves.

Akita is a snowy area and when the snow melts in spring, a lot of rubbish can be seen at the roadside. We collected six 90-liter bags of trash. We will continue holding exchanges with other local companies to make the area friendlier to people and to protect the global environment through various environmental protection activities.

Also in fiscal 2010, 2,006 books were collected and donated to local kindergartens, elementary schools, hospitals, and prisons. Through this activity, we have already donated 7,000 books to the local community. We will expand this activity to all our bases in the country. On April 1, 2010, seven Group companies in Thailand were consolidated into one to form the largest Japanese-based company in the country. We intend to expand our local contribution activities accordingly.

"Take Root" activity for the environment and local community

We have taken part in a tree-planting activity called "Take Root" for the past five years, and we are aiming to plant a total of 5,000 trees by 2010. Up to December 2010 we planted 5,083 trees, exceeding our initial target. In Monterey Mexico, 23 employees planted 70 trees in a park damaged by the summer hurricane, while employees in Spartanburg in the United States provided more than 600 trees to be planted in private gardens or presented to friends. Also in October, employees volunteered for a tree-planting activity held in the recreation area on Saturday mornings. In the same month, employees in Vermont purchased 70 trees and donated them to 12 organizations.

In-house event and activity held with the participation of employees and their families

On March 31, we enjoyed the Fun Day event, which was held to collect donations for victims of the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan's Tohoku region. On the day all employees joined in team games in the cricket playground located across the office. We also had a barbecue party and all participants, including some employees' families, had a pleasant afternoon. The event, which included a game in which employees threw cold wet sponges at their managers, rounders (similar to baseball), tug-of-war, and a lottery with presents, was a great success and donations totaling £1,046 were collected.

Giving presents to orphans

There are more than 200 orphans living in the local orphanage. I want the children to know that, despite the hardships, there will always be someone kind enough to help them achieve their goals.

Representing the company, the Facilities Section team visited the orphanage and gave presents to the orphans. The employees talked about the future with the children and encouraged them to be ambitious. We will continue supporting the orphanage so that the children will be well taken care of and can study and become able to make a contribution to society.
