
In 2005, Fujikura celebrates the 120th anniversary of its founding. In Japan, 60 years was traditionally considered the normal human life span, and its achievement is still celebrated as a special occasion. In these terms, Fujikura has experienced the equivalent of 2 life cycles and is preparing to embark on its third. With this in mind, we have declared that this year will mark the inaugural year of the Third Era of Fujikura.
The First Era or the dawn of Fujikura commenced with the establishment of our company in Awajicho by our founder Zenpachi Fujikura in 1885 (18th year of the Meiji Era), and witnessed the start of our manufacturing of silk and cotton windings.
Commencing in 1945 (20th year of the Showa Era), the Second Era was essentially a re-founding of our company. With our primary factory in Fukagawa completely destroyed in the war, our employees began to work as one and rebuild our company literally from the ground up. During this era, our company enjoyed steady growth, fueled initially by demand to rebuild a national infrastructure decimated by the war and later by demand for optical fiber during the period of high economic growth. We were in the business of supporting electrical power and telecommunications projects, which were building vital infrastructure that contributes to the safety and security of society. Accordingly, our business enjoyed very stable growth simply by responding to the needs of a handful of blue-chip customers.
However, investment in infrastructure has reached a plateau in recent years, and those industries are entering an era of severe competition. Therefore, a radical change in the future business environment for Fujikura is unavoidable. The same way of thinking and approach to doing business, which have been reinforced by a legacy of successes enjoyed throughout recently-ended era of stable growth and are engrained in our corporate DNA, will be a severe handicap as we enter a new era in which change is a constant. With a unified recognition and commitment to the necessity to start again from zero and re-found our company, now is the time to declare the beginning of the Third Era.

Since our founding in 1885, Fujikura has contributed to betterment of society by providing advanced technologies backed by uncompromising reliability. Our strength in the past has been a highly stable business built on strong partnerships fostered with a number of blue-chip customers. However, the markets upon which the future survival of Fujikura depends lie in the highly competitive global arena. However, in order to not only survive but also win in this market of constant and dramatic change, it is necessary to fundamentally reform our corporate culture.
To achieve this objective, we have formulated the "Mission, Vision, Core Values" in August 2005 to be shared by all Fujikura Group employees - a new set of business principles that will help us successfully navigate a new and successful course through our reformation and the Third Era.
Since then, the competitive environment surrounding our group has continued to become ever more intense and we have determined that we need to step up our reform efforts in order to build a stronger corporate structure that will enable us to maintain high profitability and achieve sound and stable growth. With this in mind, we formulated the 2015 Mid-Term Business Plan and, in a related development, the previously formulated corporate philosophy, "Mission, Vision, Core Values," was publicly re-established in October 2011 as the Fujikura Group Corporate Philosophy. This was carried out to encourage all group employees to join forces under a set of shared principles and work together to enhance our corporate strength.
