SWR™ (Spider Web Ribbon™) is an innovative optical fiber ribbon developed with Fujikura's proprietary technology.
By bundling the SWR™, which fans out, into a cable, WTC™ (Wrapping Tube Cable™) was created, featuring a highly optimized cable structure.
Through ongoing technological innovation, Fujikura contributes to realizing an advanced digital society by building the foundation for optical networks.

An optical fiber ribbon is made by arranging optical fibers, each as thin as a human hair, in a horizontal row and bonding them together at regular intervals.
When you hold the ribbon by both ends and spread it out, it resembles a spider's web, hence the name Spider Web Ribbon™ (SWR™).

A fiber optic cable where SWR™ are bundled together, wrapped with tape, and housed within the cable.
Thanks to the unique features of SWR™, no plastic rods called slots are used inside, resulting in an exceptionally thin and lightweight design compared to conventional cables.
This innovative structure gave rise to the name Wrapping Tube Cable™ (WTC™)

A Comfortable Communication Environment to Enrich Your Life

Nowadays, the internet has become an indispensable part of our lives.
Recently, a variety of AI-powered services have emerged, making life even more convenient.
Optical fiber technology, capable of transmitting vast amounts of data instantly, plays a key role in creating a seamless internet experience.
Fujikura’s fiber optic cables will continue to deliver reliable connectivity, enabling a comfortable communication environment and enriching lives worldwide.

Optical technology that will change the future — The true value of
SWR/WTC

Achieving unprecedented thinness and lightness.

A fiber optic cable contains many optical fibers.
Traditionally, optical fibers were arranged in a row, fully coated with resin to form a ribbon, and then inserted into the cable. However, this ribbon could only bend in one plane, requiring slots inside the cable for flexibility, which made the cable thicker and heavier.
Leveraging advanced optical development and manufacturing technologies cultivated over many years, we developed a technique to bond fibers at regular intervals, creating a mesh-like structure and an innovative ribbon that can bend freely in any direction.

The key strong point / feature of SWR™ is its ability to bend freely, eliminating the need for slots inside the cable.
This allows a much higher fiber density within the cable, making it significantly thinner and lighter than conventional designs.

In urban environments where cables must pass through narrow spaces, our WTC™ enables the routing of many fibers even in tight areas, delivering a high-speed, high-capacity communication environment

Moreover, when using the same cable diameter as traditional fiber optic cables, WTC™ can accommodate far more fibers.
With the rapid growth of generative AI, global communication traffic is increasing daily, driving the need for stronger optical fiber networks. WTC™, capable of multiplying transmission capacity many times over, is the solution to this challenge.

SWR /WTC reduce environmental impact
 by minimizing material use
 and energy consumption during installation.

Making cables thinner and lighter means less material is used and less electricity is required for manufacturing.
Since more cables can be loaded onto a single truck during transportation, this helps reduce CO emissions and contributes to protecting the global environment..

Fujikura, a Technology Leader

Fujikura’s DNA has been rooted in innovation since its founding by Zenpachi Fujikura.
Fujikura has consistently leveraged its technological expertise to create groundbreaking products that previously did not exist in society.
‘This will change the world.’ That was the thought of the engineer responsible for SWR™/WTC™ when they completed the prototype by hand at their desk using commercially available adhesives.
Its web-like shape inspired the name ‘Spider Web Ribbon (SWR™),’ which was later trademarked.
