Fujikura-Kiba Millennium Woods
About

Local community
As a symbol

In response to requests for greenery from local schools and residents and increased attention to biodiversity as Fujikura Group redeveloped the site of its head office, we established a natural space, "Bio Garden Fujikura-Kiba Millennium Woods," on the site in November 2010.
The name of this forest reflects the hope that, together with the local community in Kiba, Koto Ward, "the rich nature will continue for a thousand years to come." The 2,200m2 site includes two ponds with a stream connecting them, floating islands, and walking paths, and is designed as a space where living creatures take priority.
In order to recreate the rich forests and woodlands of the Musashino Plateau hundreds of years ago, we have focused on native species, created a Machilus forest native to southern Kanto and a mixed forest that coexists with nature, and recreated an ecosystem that takes biodiversity into consideration, focusing on native species, using the nature of the Arakawa River basin as a model. In addition, we have improved the aquatic environment by transplanting aquatic plants and bottom mud from the Arakawa River basin and collecting and releasing about 500 fish of seven species, as well as providing a diverse habitat by transplanting topsoil, breeding banks, dead trees, floating islands, pine logs, driftwood, and creating stagnant pools and shallows using komatsu stone and bush stone.

concept
The area around the upper pond has been designated a protected area to protect the habitat of living creatures, with many evergreen trees used to create a mountainous landscape, while the area around the lower pond has been designated an open area for people to stroll and enjoy the scenery, with many deciduous trees used to create a rural mountain landscape.
Furthermore, the stream connecting the two ponds was designed to flow like a mountain stream.
It also links and connects to the Waterfront Promenade in Koto Ward, where Fujikura's headquarters are located, providing an open public space.

What is a bio garden?
A biogarden is a garden that incorporates elements of a biotope (German: Biotop).
The "bio" in biotope means "life, living thing" and "top" means "place."
In English, it's called a biotope. In other words, it means a space where wild animals live, and it refers to a garden that incorporates elements of a biotope so that people can enjoy and relax.
The Fujikura-Kiba Millennium Woods Bio Garden is made up of a protected area/biotope area that prioritizes wildlife, and a bio garden that incorporates these elements and allows us to relax and enjoy ourselves. There are aquatic plants and mosses along the water's edge, earthworms, insects, and fungi in the soil, and crucian carp, killifish, and dragonfly nymphs (baby dragonflies) live in the rivers and ponds. In addition, various birds such as herons, kingfishers, and spot-billed ducks fly in to feed on these creatures.
Our goal is to work with the local community to develop a "bio garden" that serves as a place of relaxation where people can feel close to diverse living things.
