Fujikura has received an order for a FTTH (Fiber To The Home System) for 3,200 subscribers on the Phuket Island from TOT Public Company Limited (*1), the largest telecommunications carrier in Thailand.
This project was planned by TOT, in accordance with the ICT policy of the Thai government, as one part of a plan to promote ultra high-speed broadband systems in access area. The famous tourist site as a resort island of Phuket was selected as the first model area, and suppliers were sought through open bidding.
Fujikura joined a consortium formed by the local Italian-Thai Development Co. (*2) and the Siam Fiber Optics Co. (*3) as the subcontractor, and proposed a system based on GE-PON (*4) technology enabling the "triple play". TOT recognized our technical advantage and track record in Japan, selected us as the system supplier, and the contracts have been signed.
The contract is for a full turnkey system for subscribers at 3,200 subscribers (including single family homes, resort hotels and office buildings). This will be a full-scale FTTH system where optical fiber is laid directly to each subscriber premise, and includes optical fiber cable, GE-PON equipments, related NW equipments, connectors, in-door wiring and installation work. The transmission system will be GE-PON, where 3 different types of signals -- video, VoIP telephone and ultra high-speed Internet -- are provided with a single optic fiber. TOT will be the first company in Southeast Asia to use this system for commercial service.
In proposing and delivering this GE-PON technology, we have enlisted the cooperation of Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation -- a company which lead the standardization of GE-PON and has extensive experience using this technology in optical access services -- and are using the products of Mitsubishi Electric Corporation.
